Although their very fine debut, 1997's Sóknardalr, had already shown a remarkable creative vision and no lack of songwriting maturity, Windir's second album, 1998's Arntor, took advantage of lessons learned and much improved production standards to take the group's folk-laden black metal to a whole new level.

A excellent mix of pagan lyrics and a beautiful atmospheric black metal sound. Instrumentally its pretty good but sounded pretty average black metal but they do it quite excellent and do expand more definitly lean more into pagan and dungeon synth more then traditional black metal which is cool. Some songs on this definitly could've been perfect but fell short in a few aspects but no real major problems. Not much to really say about this.

usually i’m not a huge fan of this melodic, epic nordic style black metal, the shit that sounds like crazy viking fights, it just ain’t my shit. i like my black metal dark n satanic or blue pink and white. but this might be the like, only real exception. the riffs are beautiful, almost twinkling with melodic glory, the screamed vocals are some of my favorite i’ve heard in timbre, and the album is just filled to the brim with magically intense sound. the clean choir vocals ... read more
This album is pure magic and joy to listen to, absolutely fantastic. A faded sense of nostalgia envelop the entirety of the melodic songs that I can't find anywhere else. Such an inspiring and touching record from start to finish.
