Brandy knows her way around a hip-hop beat, layering tender-tough vocals over spare arrangements like a lower-key Janet Jackson or a more stripped-down Mary J. Blige. Good songs and crisp production make Brandy a moody, moving success.

A premature effort, at best.

An overlooked R&B classic that's aged surprisingly well not only within her catalogue but within the scene in the mid 90's, at a staggering age of only 15 she musters a project that feels filled to the brim with personality backed up by instrumentation that feels so vivid, colourful and inventive, resulting in there not being a single dull moment on the album.

The most wholesome part about this whole record is when she begins listing a few big names from Whitney Houston to ... read more

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ: There’s a sameness in the album’s production that should be noted, but her voice? Aaaah, what a delight. Brandy truly manages to carry the record and keep it from being monotonous. For a debut, it’s a perfect showcase of talent within the possible context of a Black teenager in the ’90s.

What an amazing debut album from Brandy! The first four songs are so fucking good, I wasn't a big fan of the "Dedicate" interludes, but I decided to include them as one single track (6.3). Her voice is sooooo cool, and to be able to sing like that and write the songs she's writing, at 15 (!!) is insane! She's such a legend.

Favourites:
1. I Wanna Be Down
2. Best Friend
3. Baby

Least Favourites:
10. Brokenhearted
11. I'm Yours
12. Dedicate I, II, and III)

I think for a debut this is solid and considering it was released by a teenager is honestly even more impressive. Brandy was obviously very diligent and proved a lot to the people around her. The only thing I can say is that it is very wishy-washy on lyrics and some production choices.

Favorites: Sunny Day, I Wanna Be Down, and Give Me You
