Part of what makes Circa Waves so compelling is that they are able to match the sound of their influences while still believably making the results sound their own. They've grown into an assured rock entity, but they've retained their fundamental sense of working-class Liverpudlian blues.
‘Different Creatures’ is brasher than its predecessor, with a heavier, more distorted sound. The band have their gaze firmly set on being future festival headliners, stacked as it is with massive alt-rock tracks. It’s loud and swaggering, the defiance of youth compressed into song format.
Whilst obviously not the best album of all-time, Different Creatures adds considerable weight to the band’s growing ambitions, and at this point in time Circa Waves probably represent an upgrade on Catfish And The Bottlemen, leaving them hot on the heels of The 1975 and Wolf Alice.
Different Creatures is likely to prove too nostalgic to win over critics of 00s ‘indie landfill’, and Circa Waves still lack the spark that is going to reignite British guitar rock, but that won’t matter for most fans of their debut. .This is another exciting, polished album that's destined for outdoor stages.
It leaves their second album feeling not only retro but slightly lazy, too: there’s nothing distinguishing this lot from the more disposable products of last decade’s guitar-rock boom.
An amazing record by Circa Waves, including rock in the mix was the best way to go for them and it worked out better than ok
A lot of the negativity towards this album is generated towards this because this 'indie' album sounds like another 'indie' album. What were people expecting? Them to create a R n B record? Come on! It's an indie band adding another great album to the genre.

Overall, you get the impression this album was written to listen to during a tough day of work rather than a relaxed day at the beach like Young Chasers – and to perform at a larger venue too. Their sound will undoubtedly fill it because if their live shows ooze the newfound confidence of Different Creatures, they will do a spectacular job.
