Although My Soft Machine doesn't necessarily match quality of the debut album, there are still some gems to be found and Devotion is probably the brightest of them. An unexpected shift of pace, a hard-hitting, bass-driven rock banger contradicts other songs on the LP while still maintaining Arlo's trademarks: a soft, gentle voice and poetic lyrics seething with emotions. I wish Arlo experimented more with her sound, this song shows a lot of promise for her upcoming work.
For me it's one of the weaker ones off the album so far-- the vocals are solid but I can barely hear the early lyrics-- feels a little too distorted maybe. Great second half. Still really solid, but not my favorite from this record yet :)
So far, I think Arlo's writing is just as tight on this album as it was on Collapsed-- but it's missing the rich production of its predecessor. Not to say it's produced poorly, but I personally find it a lot less satisfying. On Collapsed there are only a few ... read more
