An improvisatory companion to 2022’s Inside Problems, Andrew Bird’s newest instrumental album channels the warmth of its Ojai, California setting.

Beats Per Minute

If Inside Problems was the feature film, then Outside Problems is the accompanying TV series that adds context to the main feature, but also has its own branches of story to offer those interested. Never one to let good ideas lie low, Andrew Bird continues to offer the full picture, which his fans will no doubt appreciate the most.

A tranquil and patient instrumental companion to last year's 'Inside Problems' akin to what Adrianne Lenker did with 'Songs' and 'Instrumentals' in 2020. This project contains some of the best material in Andrew Bird's excellent catalogue such as 'Mo Teef' and 'Heaven's Boughs' but it's not going to have much replay value for me personally outside of those two tracks because I get a lot from Bird's vocals (even if its just whistling or vocalising).

Birds are faintly chirping in the background a lot of the time. It's walk through a strange but beautiful forest.

It was his latest release at the time and I thought it would be a good starting point, but I got bored of it and didn't bother finishing it until now. I'll be honest I think he has some really great stuff, he's obviously very skilled at almost every instrument he plays and is very passionate about ... read more
