Although its soundscapes sometimes overshadow its songwriting, the album captures just about everything that’s always made Mew special, so it also serves as a strong battle cry of a band that refuses to let a recent loss get in the way of their magic.
Their ever-morphing vision has simply moved beyond terrestrial bonds and ascended into the expanse of the galaxy.
Overall, Visuals is the sound of an established band that's confident in its distinctive sound. It also feels like an album that largely preaches to the converted, rather than one that captures the spirit of the times.
The seventh album from Mew suggests the Danish alt-rock trio could say more with less. It’s a pop record with a light outer frosting of edginess.
This time diminished seems an apt description for an album that feels smaller and more compact, lacking the glorious floating extravagances of the past.
It’s a confident release from a seasoned band still harbouring the energies of youth.
Visuals is drenched in grandiosity, but many of its songs are devoid of proper exploration; instead of pushing the limits, they often feel idle.

The low scores for this album perplex me. Its a fantastic album that feels like a cleaner +-, using shorter track lengths and smoother transitions. Mew have a very distinct sound as it is. So exploration into new sounds is minimal but still noticeable with their use of heavier riffs (Candy Pieces All Smeared Up) and Saxophone (Twist Quest). I think their ability to perfect their own sound and create a very clean and easy record to listen to should warrant a listen.

Incredibly underrated by the few people who've listened to it. Personally, easily one of my favorite albums I've listened to. Many tracks seem inspired roughly by late Beatles era psychedelia and rock, with the album having an overall much tamer and mainstream-friendly sound than their previous albums (though that's not necessarily a bad thing in this case).
