The ballads ... hit hardest, conveying themes of urban paranoia, dislocation and a raft of contemporary neuroses against a melodramatic musical backdrop with powerful portenous vocals.
The '85 release 'Artificial Intelligence' ups the eighties big production cheese whizz factor and as a result isn't held in very high regard by most Cale aficionados; I can understand this reaction...but I have to say I’ve got a big soft spot for this one.
In terms of atmospherics it really hits the nail on the head, especially during the one-two hit of the classic 'Dying On the Vine' and almost as intriguing 'The Sleeper'. There's more than a little David Byrne to Cale's vocal delivery ... read more
