the tryhard sonic focus of the debut is gone and replaced with some pretty funny musical tangetially
- It’s the 80s, sweetheart, and Michael Zilkha wanted Suicide to become the new sensation of NYC’s dancing scene, so he signed the duo to his label and assigned Ric Ocasek to produce their sophomore album at the Power Station, smoothing out the sharp corners and carefully paving the path from rags to riches.
the songs on their 1977 debut ‘Suicide’ are monotonous and generally minimalistic, but it serves the artistic concept because the production is intended to be tortuous and the vocal performances menacing, and the repetition adds to the mystery and almost alien sonic uncleanliness…
…but this album kinda just feels like a fat batch of unfinished 80s synth demos.
