While Umbilical is still a nightmarish depiction of destroyed emotions and blind rage, its combination of production subtleties and light nods to '90s influences peel away just enough intensity to make the album Thou's most coherent and engaging work yet.
The headline takeaway is that Thou art pissed, yea, even more pissed than normal, but they’ve channeled that rage into some excellent music, as usual.
The primal anger at the center of Umbilical remains palpable, making it one of Thou's most memorable efforts to date. Long-time fans will still find the molasses-caked riffs and beefy tones that they'd expect after the band's almost two-decade career, but that tinge of hardcore energy does a lot to revitalize their well-established sound.
While 2014’s Heathen and 2018’s Magus were glacially paced, 70-minute behemoths that took several spins to fully entangle, this sixth album is arguably the most immediate, visceral record Thou have ever released.
Umbilical is a different beast than their classic Heathen or their top-notch collaborative albums, but it’s Thou through and through, and that’s a great thing.
With Umbilical, Thou toe the doom-metal line re the inevitability of suffering/the urgent need for defiance while rummaging in an expanded playbook. The band flirt with songs and song structures, writhing, per usual, in a hellish din, Bryan Funck exuding immeasurable discontent.
From what I've heard of Thou, I've found their work to be gradually getting better over the years and I truly believe "Umbilical" to be their best work that I have heard. I think this album works better than their other albums because of how they focus more on writing shorter songs with even more packed into them than their longer songs with less substance that cause them to drag. They have still stayed true to their sludge, doom, and drone metal roots despite the ... read more

My headache is so worth it!
Despite it being incredibly sludgy - submerged in the darkest depths of the sea, past the angler fish where only the bones live - it’s got such a clear effect. I was so confused by everyone calling this “heavy” but whilst it starts out murky from afar, you slowly are drawn into it and sinking despite your strongest attempts to stay upright.

SUMMER SPREE - ALBUM #18
I had a really hard time saying this was sub-80, but ultimately a lot of what decides that for me is willingness to put it on a playlist, of course there are situations I have given an 8 but haven't put something on a playlist but that is usually for something that won't fit into a playlist of mine, I have a metal playlist, so that should not be a problem, but I just couldn't push myself to put it in a playlist. A lot of this revolved around the fact ... read more
