Like Hasegawa's previous efforts, Mahōgakkō is an inventive, genre-obliterating release that demonstrates the artist's mastery of hyper-technical yet exhilarating songcraft.
The biggest knock against Mahōgakkō is that it's sometimes too overwhelming for its own good.
It looks like another rating of 90 in 2024 might just be out of reach...
No, but seriously, Hakushi Hasegawa killed it on this project. An absolutely insane album with lots of really intense, glitchy, noisy, and also jazzy compositions. Controlled chaos in great form. Tracks like Departed, Gone, and KYŌFUNOHOSHI are the purest examples of the brain melting sound of this album at its loudest, but tracks like Mouth Flash, The Blossom And The Thunder, and Boy's Texture incorporate this sonic mayhem with some very beautiful and melodic passages as well.
