Taken as a whole, this is an utterly brilliant, dependably polished listen, and one that is unquestionably up there with the best moments in this duo’s storied career.
‘Bauhaus Staircase’ somehow manages to walk the precarious tightrope between those two choices with absolute power, determination and conviction.
Ultimately, the album’s highlights are those songs where the voice and sentiment we hear is truly her own, the enthralling, stirring, emotion- manipulating voice that’s threaded its way through every album since her 2006 debut, not the voice that leans too close to what the pop music machine demands.
To begin writing Faithfull off with this album would ... be a gross insult. These songs may be scorched with an unavoidable yearning quality, but they find her standing at a new creative peak.
The four tracks on this new EP ... may lack the visceral impact that comes with actually seeing Cave stalk round the stage, alternately lamenting or howling with boundless energy and leaving audiences utterly mesmerised, but they at least go some way to explaining just what the fuss is about.
