a great sounding record; the frenetic stop-start rhythms escort you from slowcore to post-punk and back, often at a moments notice. the vocals are delivered from someone who could do more, but doesn't. instead, she asks you to listen carefully. feel it.

ulrika spacek make a case for crossover-appeal with ‘expo.’ The pop-adjacent stylings of radiohead, portishead, and tame impala can all be heard here, as well as neo-psych heroes deerhunter. expo is a dense, moody album that, while ambitious, could’ve paid off more with a crisper mix. an exciting sonic palette with great rhythms and production-ideas, if not production itself. regardless, there’s plenty here to enjoy and even get excited about.
jesso jr. is credited as a songwriter on rosalia’s ‘lux,’ which came out recently. i think that record and ‘shine’ might share some conceptual dna. in each, pop forms are appreciated as nearly religious experiences. in the case of ‘shine,’ we find piano pop taking an almost hymnal shape.

song after song, kevin parker sounds like he’s auditioning to provide filler on the latest fifa soundtrack. boring, repetitive, underwritten and overproduced, ‘deadbeat’ runs out of ideas before it even begins.
