Tiny Mix Tapes

Third documents Alex Chilton’s choice to stop making choices, to follow his whims and fascinations to whatever end.

AllMusic

A shambling wreck of an album, Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers ranks among the most harrowing experiences in pop music; impassioned, erratic, and stark, it's the slow, sinking sound of a band falling apart.

Third is guitarist-singer Chilton’s untidy masterpiece. It is beautiful and disturbing, pristine and unkempt — and vehemently original.

A great album in spite of its maker's worst intentions - amid the wreckage, don't miss Stephens' oasis of sanity and sweetness, For You.

Desolate yet beautiful posthumous affair.

ROLLING STONE #285
individually, so many strong songs but as an album, the theme wasn't super focused. i loved the haunting slow songs, that's where it shined the most for me. rolling stone must love them a lot because 3/4 of their records are on this list... crazy. i do see why people criticize this though, but personally I enjoyed it.

It's intensely melancholic, something perhaps best shown on their cover of Femme Fatale, one of the lesser expected things yet intensely understandable songs on the album, given much like The Velvet Underground, Big Star were a band well known in their hometown and made some of the best albums ever ... read more

I thought the writing was great and the instrumentation was incredible on some tracks but others were a bit slow or underwhelming for me. My favorite moments on this album were the more up tempo rock tracks and my least favorite moments were the slow and darker tracks. While I think the writing on those songs are very emotional and powerful, I just found the pacing to be a bit too slow for me. However, the ... read more
