Getting Killed, the follow-up to the fantastic 2023 record 3D Country, sees Geese forming more of a signature sound, an amalgamation of Cameron Winter’s solo LP Heavy Metal and the explosivity of the band’s former record, to establish their place in the sphere of Rock music. In a time where we almost thought that Rock music was dead and becoming a thing of the past, these guys from New York just rush in and revitalize it, at first with their last record and now with their latest. ... read more
3D Country is an amazing project filled with an amazing throwback sound to classic 60s and 70s rock while simultaneously never falling victim to being nostalgia-soaked or just a plain copy. I love the theme and lyrical motifs, Cameron Winter’s vocals are one of a kind and he’s easily the greatest frontman we have this decade, what a voice, what singing acrobatics and what insane, interesting and bizarre lyricism he brings to the table is unmatched. The songs on here can go from ... read more
[EDIT 92-->100]:
yeah fuck i get it this is the greatest thing ever
I've been obsessed with Geese over the past week or so, like, I just listened to one track on a random day and became completely enamoured with them, to the point where I just listened to all of their stuff in one day and it's been on repeat ever since, and both their sophomore record as well as lead singer Cameron Winter's solo debut would've been in my top 10 of last year if I had listened to it when ... read more
I have a person in my life who really loves sleep token and i try again and again to get the appeal and sometimes there are glimpses of it but this is just not one of these cases. I dislike this song with a passion. I am always utterly baffled by how these guys don't hear how their genre combinations just don't work. Love the lack of a lyrical filter on this one and it does end on a great note but man that latin-pop reggaeton whatever beat just rubs me in all the wrong ways, what the ... read more
Lucy Dacus and the lost art of love song writing?
I see a lot of hardcore (and casual) fans of Lucy complaining about the softer sound palette and less emotionally intense writing, but personally, I don’t think the lyrics on Forever is a Feeling are less intense - I still believe Dacus to be the most talented writer out of Boygenius (though Phoebe is the better composer) - they just shifted to concentrated emotions of yearning, being in love and romantic feelings in general. Most of her ... read more
EUSEXUA is an early but honestly fairly solid album of the year contender. I rediscovered FKA twigs' discography in preparation for this project, and now, after having heard the LP a couple of times, I think this might really be her best full-length project yet. The teasers leading up to its release were already fantastic and I'm glad that the rest of the project holds up to that standard of production, writing and emotion, it's just such a distinct vision and an amazing ... read more
FKA twigs' M3LL155X EP is most likely her most astonishing set of tracks to date. Sure, it doesn't manage to offer that kind of cohesion that a full-length project of hers would, but in terms of lyrical allure, instrumental complexity and melodic dynamics, this is exceedingly impressive and absolutely her very best work, and genuinely a contender for best EP of the 2010s decade. I love how this is simultaneously grand and explosive but manages to stay very intimate and personal. The ... read more
This is the only post-2013 FKA twigs project that I'm not head-over-heels for, I don't know what it is, there is beautiful textured production and a lot of the tracks are pretty captivating to listen to, but something about twigs' writing just doesn't connect to me nearly as much as a lot of her other work that would come after. I get why some people think this is her best work but for me, something in there about the actual songs is just not really resonating with me. I ... read more
While maybe not even containing highlights that are as high as her first EP, EP2 stands out as an improvement on most fronts for FKA twigs. The production is more detailed, layered and interesting, her writing becomes much more intriguing here and the entire clinical and cerebral atmosphere of this project with Arca amazingly supporting her is definitely a precursor to all the amazing work that would follow.
EP1 is an impressively solid start for FKA twigs, as it already features a lot of what makes her newer releases so brilliant - some still rudimentary but nevertheless clean and trippy production, fantastic writing and some great vocals on top of all of it. My favorite songs are Ache and Breathe, the other two kind of felt a little lacking in terms of being anything considerably memorable, but besides that, the music on this project is still very worthwhile and very ahead-of-the-curve for 2012. ... read more
Gotta be honest, I don't think that I've quite observed and digested everything properly yet, but one thing that I want to mention head-on is that I don't think she nails the drone stuff? Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, and there are actually some really interesting and compelling soundscapes in here, but man, the melodic moments of actual songwriting on this thing are far superior to pretty much any of the lengthy ambient pieces. I think this project contains some of ... read more
I've been obsessed with Father John Misty for the past few weeks - I've always loved Pure Comedy, casually enjoyed I Love You Honeybear but never did a deep dive into his discography, but prompted by this new release of his, I did, and I quickly realized that he's actually one of my favorite artists working today, and this album is a fantastic addition to his ouvre.
Mahashmashana is really a sonic smorgasbord for Tillman, going from grand and exhilarating ballads to fast-paced ... read more
GNX shows that Kendrick knows what he has to do to control the culture while still maintaining a sense of artistic control and dignity, giving the people pretty much exactly what they wanted after the massive win he had in the beef against Drake. I genuinely believe that this project would be even more well-received than if he had dropped like a second TPAB-10/10-conceptual-masterpiece, and even as somebody who likes Kendrick in his more introspective and less skeletal bag, I must admit that ... read more
On my first listen, Chromakopia kind of felt like a disappointment. I was already not too excited for the record because the singles didn’t impress me much and the overall rollout just happened way faster than I would’ve expected, and when I pressed play for the first time, I was a little sad that it felt like a Call Me If You Get Lost Pt.2 rather than a completely new sound and aesthetic. This album’s first half is a little weaker in general, so it took me about three tries ... read more
One of the loveliest sets of tracks that this era of Folk music had to offer, with honestly some of the most powerful and gorgeous songs of the early 70s, and an LP deserving of its classic status. I don't perceive the album as truly one of the greatest records ever recorded as some people claim, I certainly think there are some incredible highlights here but the ones that stand out make the other ones pale in comparison a bit. I love the harmonies, the instrumentation is beautiful and ... read more
My girlfriend really adores this album, and I really like the sound of this album too. Despite being your typical atmospheric Dream and Indie Pop, but the singer's great vocals together with the potent lyricism and very ethereal instrumentation manage to get this LP to a point where it sounds dynamic and moving.
I just saw Dylan two nights ago in Erfurt, Germany, and I think I wasn't ever more glad and happier with a decision to go to something in my life. Not that he was performing with the craziest skill of any musician ever, but the guy still has it after all these years. He's still got charisma, he's funny, his voice sounds better than it did a decade ago and the energy is still there despite being 83 years old. I also loved how he was just constantly looking over his shoulder ... read more
Certainly a step down from the LP they dropped earlier this year, but there's still some really good stuff on here, and I like that it goes into a few different directions without ever committing to a single distinct sound. This one has a lot of the more kosmische, Kraut and Ambient influences that I love the most in all of their stuff, and of course the instrumentation on this record is top notch. With each release of this band, I realize more and more that I wish we would just get ... read more
Love that this is really a revitalization of the Brat era, Charli and her team truly know what to do in order to get people talking and keep this one single project of an artist in constant rotation and circulation. I don't think remixes have ever made as much of a spash as they do here, and I do enjoy how each artist brings something different to the table and manages to rework the songs in a way that makes them feel completely fresh. It does not even feel like the same album to some ... read more
Sometimes an album is just so solid, pleasant and moving that you're sorta in awe of how good it is without it being "anything special", you know? I'm not saying Laura Marling isn't special or anything like that, but just how she can craft this beautiful, touching and endlessly enjoyable record without it ever trying anything that's extra or out of the ordinary. This is a very traditional Folk singer-songwriter project, with a short and tight tracklist of gentle, ... read more
