Painfully mediocre. Even his flawed albums like The Life of Pablo, Ye, and Donda still had way more ambition and dynamic songs in it's best moments. Most of the stuff here are barely songs, more like sketches. For once, Kanye doesn't even sound confident here. His worst works usually felt like ego without needed limits, but here Kanye almost seems wounded and hesitant to do anything interesting here.
Great album. After BTTIGTP I wondered if they'd continue down this route and I am glad they are.
Double album to follow up a decent debut. Side A is great and a major improvement over A.M. Side B falls off a bit and has some lows but also highs. Ultimately it is a much better record than the debut, but the double side approach holds it back.
Side A - 80/100
Side B - 70/100
It’s very good, but it’s too long and tends to lull. It’s much moodier than his last album, and I can get behind that, but 19 songs of very slow and moody songs can lose it’s impact quick. None of the songs are bad, the good songs are very good, and a lot of the features breathe life into the songs they’re on. If Zach is going to continue to be as prolific as he has been, he needs to bring variety or get an editor.
Great album. Keeps a consistent tone throughout but still feels dynamic and varied.
Yeah it's repetitive and this is the third album from a band that do no switch up their sound at all. The lyrics also aren't great, but I have always been into the vibe from the music they make. Guilty pleasure or not, I just enjoy listening to the music these guys make.
It's interesting. I don't think everything works. I dig the concept, but I think the execution doesn't go the distance. Eminem sounds really good here. I hear a lot more of the classic shady cadence than on his last several albums. Some lyrical pitfalls at times, but also some pretty good lyrics throughout. I think what's most disappointing is Eminem can't shake some of his bad habits. I think he manages to improve and fix a lot of problems that he suffered from on his ... read more
A mess of an album. Way too long, way too sprawling, and way too hit or miss. There are some duds on here, but there's also a hell of a lot of highlights too. I don't think a Kanye album has been this fun in a long time. Some emotional songs regarding his mom are pretty powerful as well, but any emotional stuff outside of that topic falls flat. I think the Kim inspired song "Lord I Need You" is quite lame and demonstrates how far Kanye has fallen when it comes to being ... read more
Kanye has always had a lot of Christian influence in his music, and it’s resulted in some great music. Kanye finally makes a Christian album and it’s the most uninspired and lifeless album he has ever made, God has a great sense of humor. Even the Kanye albums I have a lot of issues with I would not consider bad. Mediocre? Sure, but not bad. This is a bad album.
On paper, this is a really interesting album. Kanye isolates himself on a ranch in Wyoming amidst some major backlash and public scrutiny and makes a 23 minute album. Following up a sprawling and messy album like TLOP, a 23 minute no-frills record sounds kind of perfect. So, it's all the more disappointing that this album turns out so messy and unnecessary. I don't think lyrically Kanye does a great job contextualizing his mental health and controversies. I think most of the attempts ... read more
All over the place. It's the complete opposite of MBDTF. All of kanye's best qualities are here, but his worst qualities are on full display and his worst habits get in the way a lot throughout the record. There may be a career best album somewhere in here, but it's far too hit and miss for me to consider this one of Kanye's best.
I am a fan of industrial rap, and I enjoy a lot of Kanye's music, so I enjoy all of the music on this album. Kanye did a great job at making this an enjoyable listening experience. That said, I do think this is one of the most insincere albums Kanye has ever made. It is like the complete opposite of "808's and Heartbreaks", where here it feels like Kanye copied and pasted a lot of the work from industrial contemporaries and took the credit for being the first mainstream act ... read more
I respect the experimentation here, and in a lot of ways this feels like the most sincere album Kanye ever created. With that said, I think time has been good to this album in terms of it clearly being so influential on modern rap and pop music, but I also think time has shown that this album has some wrinkles. Kanye’s experiments with Electropop doesn’t always work as well as it’s influences, and many artists in the decade to come has vastly improved on the ground that Kanye ... read more
Arguably the most “pop rap” of Kanye’s work but I think he pulls it off. Some incredible deep cuts and really impressive club songs. Some stuff definitely has not aged well, but this may be the most accessible of his work, even more so than the first two albums.
Kanye at his best. All his best qualities are on full display here, and his worst tendencies and habits somehow work. This almost feels like lightning in a bottle instead of a genius in full control, but regardless of whatever narrative is picked, it’s one of the best mainstream rap albums out there.
I think this is an improvement over “College Dropout”. I think he improves on all the good and bad of that record. It was a good idea to let Jon Brion help guide some of his ambitions while still early on in his career. Unfortunately, Kanye will never have that humility again, but I do think this is a rather underrated Kanye album.
I don’t have the nostalgia for this album like a lot of people do. I also have the hindsight of knowing what Kanye would go on to do, and I prefer a lot of his other work over this, but this is still a great debut. It’s interesting listening to this now knowing what Kanye has done with his public persona, because you can see an interesting connection between him now, and the pros and cons throughout this record.
I don’t think it’s bad, I think the second half has some more memorable songs. Kanye isn’t an interesting personality anymore, and I think that contributes to the album feeling pretty boring and lifeless. Kanye still has talent, so I don’t think any of the songs are necessarily bad here, it’s just got a lot of mediocrity. I also think this isn’t a good collab. Some songs have great Kanye performances but Ty$ will ruin it. Some songs have great Ty$ moments but ... read more
