Depeche Mode - A Broken Frame
66

What an odd selection of songs. They're definitely going in a moodier direction, but there's still elements of light-hearted pop in there. It makes for a very incohesive album. The songwriting isn't quite there yet and Gahan still hasn't found his voice. Leave in Silence is an outright banger though.

Highlights for me are Leaving in Silence and The Sun and the Rainfall.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In
95

I love you, but in a creepy sad way, and it's wonderful.

Highlights for me are basically the whole thing but Jangling Jack.

Coheed and Cambria - Vaxis III: The Father of Make Believe
78

At this point we all know what we're getting with these guys, but it's just real nice to have a good solid release from them. It's a like a safe space to crawl back into. Good work guys!

Highlights for me are Searching For Tomorrow, The Father of Make Believe and The Continuum II: The Flood

Iron Maiden - Fear of the Dark
72

I honestly don't think this one is bad, it's a bit too long, but it has a bit of variety about it. It definitely sounds like the band are trying to find a gritty sound that just doesn't work for them. Still, it has some good bits, some great bits and of course Fear of The Dark!

Highlights for me are Afraid to Shoot Strangers, Wasting Love and Fear of the Dark

Lady Gaga - MAYHEM
84

Well this is very 80s! It's really strong and consistent, nothing bad although I'm not a huge fan of Blade of Grass. Basically bop after bop. Nothing quite reaches the heights of Abracadabra though I'm afraid.

Highlights for me are Disease, Abracadabra, Perfect Celebrity, Zombieboy, LoveDrug and Shadow of a Man

Paul McCartney - McCartney
74

This is my first time fully delving into McCartney's post Beatles work.

This was nice! It's a fairly simple album, but it was pleasant enough to listen to. I wouldn't really go beyond that though, apart from Maybe I'm Amazed, nothing really stood out massively. Pretty charming, but not really essential.

Highlights for me are That Would Be Something, Junk and Maybe I'm Amazed.

Iron Maiden - No Prayer for the Dying
65

So we enter Maiden's rocky 90's period 😬

This one is fine, it all kind of blends together though and some of the songs are pretty messy. Not a fan of Bruce's constant growly singing and he production is a bit flat. It does have some good moments that stop it from being a lost cause though.

Highlights for me are No Prayer for The Dying, Bring Your Daughter... to The Slaughter and Mother Russia

Kelly Clarkson - chemistry
76

Ahh the break up album. It's good, I think a few of the songs sound a bit throwaway, but it's overall a very solid album. I like the direction of Kelly's last two albums, I think this one just isn't as strong.

Highlights for me are skip this part, mine, me, favourite kind of high and lighthouse

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
100

Maiden round off their stellar run of 80's albums with the sensation Seventh Son. I honestly think this is a perfect album. It's tight, the songs are great and each musician shines at one point or another. Excellent way to end a classic period for the band. No notes.

Dream Theater - Parasomnia
84

Mike Portnoy βœ…
Silly album name βœ…
Silly song names linked by silly album theme βœ…

It's by no means their best work, but I enjoyed every second of this. It's all a bit overblown and ridiculous, but that comes with the territory.

Highlights for me are Night Terror, Dead Asleep, Bend The Clock and The Shadow Man Incident

Christina Aguilera - Stripped
82

It usually takes a couple of albums for the pop princesses to break out and create an artistic statement album, not with Christina though! It's messy and all over the place but it definitely doesn't hold back. It could definitely be shorter, but I don't think that's the point. I think it was designed to be fully out there and in your face, flaws and all.

Highlights for me are Walk Away, Fighter, Impossible, Beautiful, Get Mine, Get Yours, Dirrty and The Voice Within

Depeche Mode - Speak & Spell
69

Move me disco.

At some point over the last week I passed 300 followers, so new list it is!

Depeche Mode are one of my favourite bands, although it's safe to say their debut is a mixed bag, although overall good. Gahan had yet to find his voice, and the songs are pretty simple and don't fully work with the vocals. Still, there are some good and even great moments with the darker material they'd be known for in the future. Puppets and Photographic spring to mind, they are so ... read more

Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
89

Maiden's weakest 80's Dickinson release is still an excellent album. I think it struggles with uninventive choruses, I love to hear Dickinson howl but just repeating the same thing gets a bit lame. However, they were trying some new ideas out, a bit of synthesizer up in here and I do think the songs go in unexpected directions. Also, Wasted Years is just an out and out banger.

Highlights for me are Caught Somewhere in Time, Wasted Years, Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner and ... read more

Kelly Clarkson - Meaning of Life
91

Clarkson's best album so far!

It's a tight 45 minutes that's a cohesive piece of work rather than a collection of songs. Kelly, somehow, sounds better than ever and the set of songs is extremely strong. More R&B than rock and it really suits Kelly's voice, she's really able to flex. The first half is a bit strong than the second, but overall this is an excellent album.

Highlights for me are Love So Soft, Meaning of Life, Move You, Whole Lotta Woman and I ... read more

The Dead Weather - Horehound
79

Sexy blues! Really strong debut album from another Jack White project. First half is pretty great, it gets a bit bumpier in the back half, but there's nothing bad. Surprisingly White is on the drums in this one, is there anything he can't do?! Alison Mosshart sounds excellent as well. It's definitely a bit weird, but I dig the vibe.

Highlights for me are 60 Feet Tall, Treat Me Like Your Mother and Will There Be Enough Water?

Linkin Park - LIVING THINGS
78

DO I DO THIS REVIEW IN CAPITALS?

Pretty solid release, it definitely sounds like something is missing, a lot of it lacks the punch and fire of the best of their work. Having said that, there are a lot of good songs, just not any real great ones for me. I did like they were trying something different with their sound though!

Highlights for me are LOST IN ECHO, BURN IT DOWN and CASTLE OF GLASS.

Kelly Clarkson - Piece by Piece
68

Kelly's strongest attribute is that she can sell mediocre material with her voice so why anyone thought it was a good idea to stifle it with such oppressive production is beyond me 🀷

It's not a terrible album, I like a fair few of the songs, they just ain't that special and it doesn't really have personality... Still Kelly still manages to shine a few times, it's just definitely her weakest effort.

Highlights for me are Heartbeat Song, Piece by Piece (Idol version ... read more

Queen - Queen

70 => 78
Re-reviewing based on the 2024 remaster and because this was one of my first reviews.

Man that new production makes a difference, those drums hit HARD! I think this is a great debut, Queen started off as a pretty standard hard rock band with obvious inspiration from Zeppelin but it still shows their flair for the dramatic even in this early form. The first half is basically banger after banger, the second half falters somewhat and I hate they included the unfinished Seven Seas ... read more

Franz Ferdinand - The Human Fear
74

It's nice to have Franz Ferdinand back! Whilst it's not up with their best it's a solid album. It's slightly goofy, but it's also groovy and sexy. I've always liked their style and this just gives me more of it, there's nothing bad here for me, most of the songs are so close to being really great but don't quite hit it. Apart from Night or Day, I loved that one. All in all though a solid 35 minutes of a band that are slightly different from other bands ... read more
