this album is perplexing to say the least
Monch is less of a flowmaniac and more of a word-smith, honing his lyrical blades (which is honestly a pretty odd change that takes me a while to get used to), which results in less mind-bending lyrical showing and more of some of the most topical songs Monch's ever written
"When the Gun Draws" is the spritual succesor to "Stray Bullet" and while i don't think it's on the same level as "Stray Bullet", ... read more
another great album from my favorite rapper out of Wu Tang
i normally defend GZA's rather "monotnous" delivery cause i think that's far from the main appeal of GZA and i do think some songs would benefit better from having a different beat
but, i do gotta admit that there are clashes between the production and rapping, mainly "Unprotected Pieces" and "Illusory Protection", that throw off my listening experience a lil bit

surprisingly good, no joke
KRS got some impressive flows especially for his time whenever he finds a pocket, and when he can't find one, he raps like the stereotypical 80's rapper whose flows people imitate or do a lazy impression of whenever they want to demonstrate how Rakim has changed flows forever
the production is super bare bones, and they blend together so much. combining that with the "steady" flows from KRS, the album just sounds like 3 huge songs

it's pretty good, that's it
i still don't see the hype behind JPeg, for a rapper whose main appeal is production, the album is disappointing on that front (granted, this is like his 2nd album)
the rapping again is servicable, boringly competent
maybe it's a me problem but the album feels ever so slightly sleep inducing
so yeah, i came in with no expectation and came out feeling nothing (i guess JPeg's not my cup of tea)

just a collection of several great songs and instrumentals
top 5:

I don't see the hype behind this at all
that first half is a slog to get through, and i'm not sold on the "futuristic" soundscape of the album (at all)
the quality gets picked up in the second half with "Yeah Right" and "Homage", then it plummets again
