God, I love this genius man. I already reviewed HiLo and I believe I mentioned that he has a weird way of captivating you with his avant-garde lyrics, and those words carry over from my HiLo view so much. While I think this album is slightly weaker than HiLo, it's still very much amazing. It truly is exciting and fun to dive into the world of Jack Stauber and look at his interpretation of typical feelings and thoughts. He, in the best way I could word it, is like an artist who so happens ... read more
I absolutely adore this album and the vibe it captures. I don't know if I'm the only one who feels like this album is the soundtrack to some western romantic tragedy, but that's what I think of when I listen to this (and maybe it's what was intended or obvious and I'm just an idiot). Like it has been said a thousand times before, Mitski is so good at making you feel what she is saying and the emotions she is trying to convey. I especially like with this album that she ... read more
I'm glad that if there is at least one thing can agree in terms of Taylor Swift, it's that this album is phenomenal. I think it's so fascinating when an artist makes an album that follows a fictional narrative, and I like Taylor's take on it more so because of her talent as a writer. It cannot be argued that she has a unique way of putting feelings into words that I'm really not seeing any other artist do in the industry. The production with Jack and Aaron here is truly ... read more
I cannot believe how amazing this album is. It's always really fascinating how it seems people will focus on one aspect of a persons work (in this case Buttercup) and seemingly toss aside the rest of the persons work, no matter how great it is. I would argue that HiLo tops Jack Stauber's entire discography, and I think it's a shame that many don't seem to know about it. Anyways, this album is absolutely amazing and has me floored every time I turn it on. I think Jack has ... read more
First bad review, kinda nervous. Well, there goes 55 minutes of my life I will never get back. Before I tear into this album that people seem to enjoy (?), I will give it the benefit of the doubt for being influential in the electronic genre. Unfortunately, just because something is objectively viewed as influential, it doesn't save it from being a bad body of work. This album is incredibly amateur and grating. Most tracks sound like a bad video game soundtrack, with the highs of the ... read more
Look, I'm not one to police opinions or anything, but if you think this album is bad or her worst... you cannot be trusted and I don't think you are listening correctly or something. This album is absolutely outstanding and her best work by far. I will die on this hill if it's the last thing I do. Each song is so beautifully cinematic and paints a picture with its sound and lyrics. Songs like Valentine, Texas and There's Nothing Left for You have that unexpected burst of ... read more
This album has a very special place in my heart because of the bond me and my mother created from this album. Midnights is amazing, and I'll stand by that for the rest of my life. I really like synth sounds, so it's no surprise that I absolutely adore this album. I was instantly captivated by her lyrics and sound upon my first listen and I've been hooked on it ever since. There's something so magical about the joy I get when I listen to this album, and how I personally feel ... read more
I discovered Night Tapes through a YouTube mix that turned on in the middle of the night on my TV, and I'm so glad I actually took the time to give them a chance. This album is so pretty. The way that Night Tapes have the power to soothe you with their chill, synth, dreamy sounds is something that oddly feels so nostalgic to me. It's enough to give me chills and make me want to drive downtown at night with no definitive destination.
The only thing I worry about here is that Night ... read more
By far her best album yet. Like, I know this woman has hella Pinterest boards the way she captures an aesthetic so well. Given how I feel about her previous albums, I was waiting to find a song that I would turn my nose up at, but I was never once met with a song that I thought was less than good. The 70s-80s vibe she promised with Jealous Type was delivered tenfold in every single song. She also showcases a range of meaningful versatility in this album with the 70s-80s sound. One song will be ... read more
This is my first full exposure to Kali Uchis and I am so happy I stumbled upon this when I did back in May. The sounds within this album are so captivating and right up my alley with stuff I like while also being something foreign and new to me. Kali's voice is genuinely so beautiful and enchanting that I felt like I was on the edge of ascension while listening to her. The lyrics are very personal to her and very well put together, and I'm just so very happy that I found this work of ... read more
I'll cut to the main point here, Killshot carries this EP. I really found myself bored or less-fulfilled by the other songs on this EP. There's a dilemma of not knowing whether the other songs are actually boring or Killshot is just so good it makes these songs look boring. Either way, not a good dilemma to have here. It's really disappointing because they have really found a sense of what their sound is here, but I just cannot find the love for these songs that I have for their ... read more
I'm a little confused on how this album was better perceived than its predecessor, because this was definitely not in the same league as their debut. Crimson is... meh. Like, I'm happy they had one more album before they disbanded, but I'm so disappointed that this is what they left is with. Graduation and Unspun are so beautifully written and honestly pretty well done, but everything else is just painfully average and not worth the time of listening to. I still like the sound ... read more
By god if each mini mix is better than the last, I actively fear for what I will become if there's a mini mix vol. 4. This mini mix is goofy, fun, and an absolute banger. That, "you're listening to MAG-DA-LENA BAY~" in Slug Song altered my brain chemistry only to be followed by the sickest song transition of all time into EXO. EXO is absolutely amazing and I love the rough feel of it only to be followed by yet another amazing transition into 2 Wheel Drive which is an amazing ... read more
This is such a huge step up from the previous mini mix. It's so much more fun and consistent in quality compared to the first one. It has the club vibe that just continues and grows the longer you listen to the first four tracks, then takes a cuter turn with Hideaway. I'm not mentioning Woww because I honestly don't know how I feel about that song even all this time later. The transition between Sky2Fall and Body is so unbelievably god tier that despite listening to it maybe a ... read more
This is such a huge step up from day/pop and night/pop in terms of them nailing more of their style. While there still is room for improvement, the songs on here are finally stepping into Magdalena Bay's fun nature. I really love Afternoon in Heaven because of its cinematic aesthetic, I just wish it didn't lead right into my second least favorite Magdalena Bay song, El Dorado. Turning Off the Rain is straight out of a Bill Nye video and I absolutely love it but not much else about it ... read more
This mixtape is so absolutely iconic and was such a career turning moment for Pink, but it's so early in her career that it's clear she hasn't found herself completely yet. I love a lot of songs on this mixtape, but there are a couple that just fade into the abyss for me. Passion, I Must Apologize, and All My Friends Know are so good in both production and lyrics, and the piano at the beginning of All My Friends Know needs to be injected into my bloodstream. However, Just For Me ... read more
I feel like by giving this album a perfect score makes me prone to getting dragged for being a Taylor Swift glazer, but I literally do not even care. I looked at my rating for maybe ten minutes trying to think if I truly felt like a perfect score and I really really do feel like this album deserves it.
Allow me to start off by being controversial... this album is better than folklore. Hear me out please, folklore is amazing and I think I'll probably also give it a perfect score, but I ... read more
This EP is definitely a first for Magdalena Bay and I feel odd about it. I feel like day/pop is the worst project by Magdalena Bay, but still holds itself up better than a lot of other artists worst albums/EPs/mixtapes. The worst song in their entire discography is #wastehistime and Set Me Off follows not far behind it. Their cover of Head Over Heels is truly what saves this EP for me, along with Waking Up being generally an okay song from Magdalena Bay. I'm so endlessly confused on why ... read more
I absolutely love night/pop and really wish Magdalena Bay would do more covers. I definitely don't stand with everyone who seems to be saying that day/pop is better because you cannot look me in the eye and tell me that #wastehistime and Set It Off beat Drive Alone. I also don't understand the criticisms on their cover of Redbone by Childish Gambino? It's a really interesting adaptation of that song that uniquely spins it into their style. It's already a great song that now ... read more
