Dream Theater’s last two albums were defined by a dark and raw sound. While they weren’t legendary works by any means, I really appreciated where this band started going. It left the question though, after Train of Thought ended, where would this band go? Would they go back to cheesy rock operas or continue making their sound more heavier and ... read more

This has always been my favorite Dream Theater album. My issue with this band has always been that they’ve felt very overdramatic, fake, cliche, and style-over-substance. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence took the band away from some of the “epic” rock opera aspects of the previous albums and instead made it more heavy, dirty, and ... read more

Starting with this album came my favorite era of Dream Theater. This middle part of their discography follows their most popular works but doesn’t get more “epic” or anything. And I actually think I will really appreciate that. This band kept getting more and more ambitious, and instead of immediately jumping to grandiose songwriting, they stripped ... read more

When I was really into Dream Theater, I held the view that this album was extremely overrated. Even when I already liked the band, I never loved this album. I always thought it was high 60s-low 70s. Well, now I’m a lot more critical about this band. I thought I would lowkey hate this album, but to be honest, not really.
I won’t do track-by-track rating this review since ... read more

This has long been Dream Theater’s most controversial album, and in some progressive circles, a lot of people said this was their death. I think it’s kind of unfair, they released a lot of acclaimed material after, but this album is definitely embarrassing. The band was under a lot of pressure from their label to make an album that was more pop-oriented. From what I know, this ... read more

I won’t say too much about this EP. Even when I was into this band I never really paid too much mind to it. This is a very long EP, which is basically one song with bonus material but I listened to those too.
The song, “A Change of Seasons”, has some good sections, and some underwhelming ones. The instrumental break like twelve minutes in is very good. For the most part, the ... read more

I never really got the hype for this one when I liked Dream Theater. People always spoke about this album not being one of the band’s best but still top three or four. I always thought it was pretty dead in the middle.
“6:00” I remember liking for a fact, and yeah, this song is pretty incredible. The vocals perfectly match the song, I really like the hazy atmosphere it invokes, it’s a ... read more

Probably the second most acclaimed Dream Theater album, I always remember this being one of my favorites. It might have been tied for number one (along with Train of Thought). James LaBrie became lead singer at this point, and it definitely helped. You can fully see the identity of this band going forward.
“Pull Me Under” is an incredible song. I love how dreamy the song sounds, and the intro is incredible. ... read more

It’s been almost two years since I last did a “hater listens to ___ discography”. I did this for 3 artists: Led Zeppelin, R.E.M, and AC/DC. Ultimately, I always like to go into this series with an open mind. It would be tiring to explain the other three series I did, but just for the record:
I entered disliking Led Zeppelin, and generally left still disliking them quite a bit. I entered disliking R.E.M, and in ... read more

It's been a year and a half since I listened to a Bob Dylan album. Time absolutely FLIES. What an album to come back to, as well. This is famously a mess. This is a Bob Dylan album with The Band backing him, but also tracks which are solely The Band, but no one quite knows when these tracks were made and when a lot of the Bob Dylan songs were overdubbed so the chronology is basically impossible to figure out. I think it's a charming album, but I have never been into ... read more
Not very good at all. This really lacked any punch outside "other side.", and overall I was just left desiring a lot more. Brent Faiyaz is a very talented artist, and he's dropped some instant classic songs, but I don't think there are any here really. That second half is rough to get through.
Really can’t tell if this is a good album but I personally lean no. A lot of the tracks end up sounding pretty redundant as it all sounds very similar though I appreciated the more ethereal “HEAD UP”, that was pretty cool. As a debut, it’s not bad at all. This also isn’t really my style of music at all, I just heard a ton of discourse about this album. I can see talent on display here, I just don’t love how it was utilized.
For a drone album I really didn’t feel it. I appreciate it for how ambitious it was and I liked a lot of the noisier songs near the beginning but a lot of stuff here dragged on and on and on and for post-rock to do that it has to be substantive and this really wasn’t.
This is a case of not having very good tracks but still generally being a likeable experience from me and a “good” album. The vibe this album sets is phenomenal. I had never heard of this guy, but apparently he is a producer for many popular artists. I can really hear it through his beats. I have to give this album a lot of credit for aging so well, as this is a dead sound, yet still sounds pretty fresh. I’ll excuse a lot of the pretty monotonous and textbook EDM songs, this ... read more
This has been getting pretty bad reviews and I think that’s fair because there is some shit on this album but there’s also some bright spots. In general, it is disappointing to see Joji getting worse and worse since his debut, but this isn’t awful I guess. It’s just bloated.
It’s funny to see everyone so torn over this album, but overall, I don’t really care that this thing is unique, it’s horrendous. This is such an obnoxious album. Despite being so noisy and hectic, it gets really boring and they just default to throwing shit-at-the-wall countless times. I can see a real passion and fire from these guys, and I respect that, but besides knowing they really care about what they’re playing, I have no major positive things to say about this, ... read more
I’ve never been a huge J. Cole guy. I think the idea of him is better than who he actually is, and he has misses more often than not. This is a great, introspective album, and if it is actually his last, then he ended on a good note, but it’s so bloated and long. I really think he could’ve benefitted from losing a few songs. I was still generally pretty invested and there were some great tracks, it just didn’t need the filler.
That last half has some really bad songs but in general I think this thing is getting a little too much hate. Her voice is kind of annoying but most of the instrumentation here is very good. Some songs even mesh really well with her voice like “The Cute Things”. But, undoubtedly, it has a bad fall off near the end, so by no means is it an amazing work.
I was never a huge fan of this album but I listened to it recently and was amazed. I thought it was kinda one-dimensional before which I do think has partial merit (the worst part about this album), but some of these songs are generational. He had one of the greatest voices ever, was an absolutely masterful producer, and made one of the smoothest sounding albums of all time. Rest In Peace, D’angelo.
This is one of the most popular and well regarded albums of all time, and it’s a really unique one. As an album, this thing is basically perfect. There are no alterations I would make to this track list. Compositionally, it is basically perfect. My only complaint might just be the fact that “Baby I’m a Star” was kind of a weak link in the album’s generational second half, sandwiched on one end by “When Doves Cry” and “I Would Die 4 U”, and ... read more
