I’ve heard this album once before, but revisiting it is quite crazy. I think I tend to overlook how good Jimi Hendrix is. A lot of these songs are absolutely incredible. All three dudes contribute so equally to the music that there really doesn’t seem like much of a hierarchy. I always thought Jimi Hendrix was kind of overrated but this listen really challenged my beliefs. “I Don’t Live Today” was excellent. That song is so underrated. The three track run at the ... read more
This album probably has the best House of the Rising Sun rendition I’ve ever heard. That was awesome. The album wasn’t as good as that one song but as an artistic step towards rhythm and blues, this thing was very good. Nina Simone is a once-in-a-lifetime artist.

This is still an amazing downright legendary album but it has kind of grown me since the first half dozen or so times I’ve heard it before. Heroin is still one of the best songs ever made, and there are some standouts here, but there’s a collection of weaker jam-band style songs that just aren’t doing it for me.
This album has a nice atmosphere to it. It is very easy to listen to. But as a “classic album”, it’s hard not to be disappointed. It’s not easy to follow a track as iconic as Respect, and she doesn’t fall completely flat, but nothing here is remotely as impressive. It really lacks a certain umph if that makes sense. Still a good album but not legendary like one might think.
Daniel Caesar disappoints me once again. Daniel Caesar has long been one of my most disappointing artists. He has two of my top 10 favorite songs of all time: “Who Hurt You?” and “CYANIDE” are genuinely like around the 7-10 spots on that list. When he is good, he is INCREDIBLY good. He is one of the most talented artists I’ve ever heard in my life. I only bring that up just to express my disappointment in his catalogue. For how high his peaks are, I cannot afford ... read more
That ending is one of the most epic endings to an album ever but in general this thing is not very consistent. There are a lot of weak tracks that seem very typically of mid 1960s blues. Not very inventive. When they wrote good songs, they were truly a generational band, but listening to a Doors album for the first time in a while makes me realize that they have a shocking amount of fluff. The fact this was a debut album though is absolutely ludicrous. It does suck to see a band peak at their ... read more
This was really mediocre to be honest. It just seemed like a lot of folk rock stereotypes of the time packaged into one. The song where they just reference people was laughably terrible. Not a very good album at all.
There’s some kind of weak tracks on this thing but this is a hypnotic collection of very personal songs. It all sounds so misty and dream like. Nina Simone was genuinely a one of a kind talent. “If I Should Lose You” is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I thought the production was weak at first but the space really adds to the atmosphere of the album.
All due respect to this album, Sgt. Peppers always cleared it and it’s not particularly close. While Revolver opens up truly generational, and has some very good songs (“And Your Bird Can Sing” is basically proto-punk), there’s some very annoying songs on here. Yes, even the admittedly loveable Yellow Submarine. This album is a lot less experimental than people think it is, and I often see the Beatles defaulting to tropes they had used before. A lot of it also seems ... read more
Yeah this is one of the first “bad” must hears on this site. This thing is such a mess. Excellent musicianship is displayed here, especially pianist McCoy Tyner and double bassist Jimmy Garrison. But this is just annoying. He’s always employed screeching but here it gets grating and it’s just a rough listen. Not as polished as any of his other works. But not raw enough to invoke anything in me.
While the second part was weaker, the first part was INCREDIBLE. This album is fucking insane. It’s so loud and bombastic. John Coltrane’s compositions were always hectic and noisy but none more so than this. I really liked his more spiritual stuff, this was pretty awesome.
This is not a horrible EP, but it is definitely one of the worst dg releases by far. Painkillers is amazing. Besides that though, this thing is not filled with a lot of great tracks. Brokeboy has one of the worst hooks of any rap song I’ve ever heard; that song is the definition of so bad it’s good. 1million also has a terrible hook. In general, this thing really tries to go for a more commercial trap sound that I think falls completely flat. The beats however are still very good ... read more
I was not impressed with this at all. I never listened to a full Simon & Garfunkel album, and I don’t think I really missed all that much. It was far from bad, but seemed a bit formulaic and didn’t really excel at it. Plus, some of these songs were really annoying. I don’t know, I just really did not love this thing.
Timpani is such an interesting choice for jazz but such a good one. Not much to say about this album. It’s so lauded for a reason. It’s a very good synthesis of fun post-bop and hypnotic spiritual jazz. I do think the second song is a little generic, though.
This will be a hot take, but this is super overrated. Comparing this to Little Girl Blue or Pastel Blues is kind of night-and-day. This album is just a lot less memorable and personal than those. Besides a few classics, there’s not a love to lot about this album though it does sound quite good production wise.
Diving into Bladee’s discography for the first time in a few years and I forgot how diverse it is. This is basically a drill project. It sounds extremely respectful to the culture too. That one dude from Instagram who says “if you’re ___, this is for you” and then dances is a feature on this EP too which I found super funny.
I’m not gonna lie, after listening to the extremely ethereal Gluee, this one is really a let down. It seems too polished for Bladee this early on in his career. I appreciate the more introspective tone but it doesn’t work as much as people say it does. I was lowkey really let down.
The last half of this thing was lowkey brutal and just kind of felt super dragged-along. It might’ve just been the lo-fi production getting to me but I was barely sitting through it. Overall, that first half warrants that I at least like this thing, it’s just super amateur.
It took a while to click for me but it's an excellent project. I do stand by the fact that Trinidad is a weak opener that sticks out like a sore thumb but everything else here is chaotic and beautiful. It's just a constant nice crescendo of sound. Definitely up there for album of the year.
