This album is definitely a huge improvement over their earlier funk metal sound. I do think the first half of this thing is generally speaking pretty weak, but that second half is a late 90s nu metal masterpiece. He has such a good voice, man. Stellar is also excellent.
This album is just so repetitive and lost any interest I had in it very quickly. That first song is really good. But then lyrically and sonically (when she wasn’t doing weird genre fusions she didn’t sound confident in), it seems like she’s just repeating the same thing on every song. This is pretty rough.
I guess this is just a case of not getting it. I don’t get it. I would rather listen to a Faith No More album who have the same sound but it’s a lot more refined and sure of itself. That one weirdly poppy track was really good though. I know they kind of abandon funk metal after this, which might be for the better. But, again, this mostly goes down to this not being my thing. Production wise, despite being very amateur, everything sounds tight and clean.
My girlfriend recently got me into this band and I heard the song “Stellar” and was hooked. One of my biggest flaws is the fact that whenever I find a song I really like, I tend to develop an aversion to that band or album. If I had to guess, I might have just developed a subconscious feeling of not wanting to be disappointed. Thus, I like to stick with the one or two songs and not risk being let down by the rest of the project. This leads me to often become disappointed by albums ... read more
This thing really veers off course near the end once the shock factor of this band had worn off. The Armed has no official members. Isn’t that crazy? I’ve never heard of these guys so sorry if I’m stating information that’s obvious, but that’s so weird. I wasn’t really a big fan of this thing but as an album it’s pretty good. The screamed vocals are great, and the genre fusions are all tasteful. There’s genuinely some songs in here that sound like ... read more
This thing wasn’t great, but it had a couple (exactly one couple) of excellent songs. I see a lot of potential here. The sound might just be too one-dimensional for now, but with more variety I am very intrigued. Ending off the album on an acoustic ballad was pretty cheesy and disappointing to see though.
I do think that 86 user score is a bit crazy, as the concept is super loose and just feels like a collection of songs rather than a fully fleshed out project, but those songs are still really good. There isn’t one miss on this project. Freddie Gibbs’ just has a great voice. I also liked the Wire reference in the first song that was cool :)
It’s fine, I guess, I just think this thing sounded super rushed. Sonically, this is not Tyler at his best, sounding kind of half-baked and incomplete. Conceptually, he prefaced the album by saying to not expect a concept, but I was still let down by how surface level everything is. The second half of this thing is actually solid, but as an album this is kind of a let down, even more than CHROMAKOPIA.
It really breaks my heart to give this score. I have always LOVED “New Grass”. That song is amazing. It is so haunting and beautiful. It has such a great feeling of dread and remorse behind it. That really is one of the greatest songs ever made, as well as one of the best lyrical compositions ever made also. Laughing Stock might just be a case of “comparison is the thief of joy”. I have put off this entire album for so long, and I thought there was absolutely no way this ... read more
Bruh. I have long been a Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson hater. Well… hate is a strong word, the dude never did anything bad. But his music, gosh. The most drab, dull, wallpaper ass prog rock music ever. I don’t think it’s a hot take to say that progressive rock has been in a bit of a crisis in the 21st century. I’m not some uncle who thinks that “all music is bad now”, quite the contrary; I think so far, the 21st century has been the greatest period of music ... read more
I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a Lady Gaga album before. Her early 2010s hits were quite good, but I never felt compelled to check out the albums they were on. First album, and my thoughts? Not very good dude… Besides a lot of these songs sounding outdated, some of the vocal mixes on here sound so mechanical and squeaky and AI reliant and I can’t really put it into words but it is weirdly dystopian. She’s an extremely talented songwriter and I wanted her to ... read more
By the end of the album, I feel like it kind of runs out of steam, but that doesn’t negate the fact that the first half of this thing is literally a masterpiece in jazz. Charles Mingus has long been one of my favorite jazz artists. He’s always so inventive. The gospel shouts during songs also really add a whole charm to this project that calls back to Mingus’ younger days and it’s so sweet. I think this thing is just so beautiful. I didn’t expect it to be this good ... read more
This album has a nice ending but in general this thing is not very good at all. It just feels unfinished man. Something about it is weird. I think the genre fusions are super tacky as well. I really liked how she used country and americana music on the record, but then she kind of discarded that away and a really cool, inventive musical idea was gone like that. It just seems like wasted potential. But she is super new, and it looks like this is her debut album. She should be great and I hope to ... read more
I think that last track is really so disappointing but overall, my opinion on this thing has definitely changed. I’ve always held the view that this album is supremely overrated and while I could kind of see why I thought that, on a, like, third or fourth listen, it is so diverse and not at all as one-dimensional as I used to think it was. It fluctuates between really nice hard bop and very emotional modal jazz. It’s just a beautiful album to be honest. But that last track is, like ... read more
I deadass was about to say this sounds like something Jane Remover would do and then I came to the realization a few songs in that it was actually Jane Remover which is pretty cool. Census Designated is almost two years old… time flies bro. This thing is pretty good, and it gets really good when she leans more into the bedroom pop type stuff. Obviously, it’s still laced with shoegaze and distortion, but I really like those songs. When she tries to go in a more noise rock direction, ... read more
It often plays it a bit too safe and the guitar mixes are often over-bearing but in general I do like it. For a very young band, it is kind of expected for the sound to be rather formulaic. I do think they have a nice candidacy to be a sort of modern day Lush.
While it started extremely promising on the first track, I kind of felt like the momentum of this thing kind of faltered and the project began to feel pretty one-note and safe. The guy has a very unique voice I will give it to him, but it's not strong enough to carry this album. I was guessing how every song would go at their respective beginnings and was right for most of them. The only true curveball in here was the last track which was pretty atmospheric and pretty, but that's ... read more
I was really excited for this album because that super sappy and emotional Drake from the early 2010s has to be one of the best primes in all of music, and this album was hyped as a return to form. This thing is not… bad. It’s an okayish project with some horrible lows, mainly, the vocal mixing, and the song “MEET YOUR PADRE”. For the former, PARTYNEXTDOOR is way too loud on a lot of the tracks. I think on either the second or third track I actually had to turn down the ... read more
This album got massacred on Apple Music. On it, the track list is basically just randomized; I had to painstakingly (okay it wasn’t that bad) queue up all the songs per the official order. But to be honest, after listening, it really didn’t matter, most of this album is pretty one dimensional. And cheesy too. But I can give it a pass because the vibe is like a sunset and I kinda like that. Still not a great album, though, it is quite overrated.
