I don’t know what more I could say about this album. It is basically the start of modern day hip hop. These guys all have insane chemistry, these beats are insane and the sampling is innovative, the lyricism is incredible… literally all of it is absolutely fantastic. I do think it ends a little weak in comparison to the first half, but this is a truly legendary album.
The acclaim this one gets is kind of lost on me. It does a good job following the masterpiece that is The Downward Spiral, but it’s very much below that level. There weren’t many standouts here, but for an EP, it was otherwise solid in forming a cohesive sound.
That Rolling Stone review has to be some form of ragebait, cause ain’t no way lol. This was an incredible album. It’s one of those few albums where I can pinpoint exact influences on particular songs, like songs which sounded very Smiths, songs that sounded very Led Zeppelin, and songs that sounded like something his father would make. But this is a COMPLETE positive, because Jeff Buckley not only treats these obvious influences with respect but excels in adapting them, maintaining ... read more
I won’t lie, this sounds completely sleepy, dull, and uninspired. It’s music to fall asleep to. I am not impressed.
I am very new to Rage so take that with a grain of salt. In general, this thing isn’t very good, and so much of this thing is so one-dimensional up until the last half, where there’s some really strong tracks. This project definitely makes a statement which is why I’m giving it some extra points but the hype kind of confuses me unless it’s solely for being visceral and unique.
I hate giving EPs such a high score because it’s not a fully fledged out project, but man, this is good. There’s a lot of Jane Remover slander and a lot of it is funny but they genuinely make such good music. What a talented and creative person, man. This was fantastic. That last song was beautiful.
This was so disappointing when I listened to it. I remember redveil from his Soulfood days. That song is really good because it has a right amount of glitchy production with soul sampling to make a very personal listening experience. But here, he sounds so clean and grandiose, and I just prefer it MUCH less. I liked the vibe of a dude and his laptop a lot more, but obviously he’s gotten bigger I understand so that’s not really a formula to live off of.
I wasn’t a fan of the singles of this thing so I wasn’t planning on checking this out but as a “must hear” it’s definitely quite appealing. It was pretty bland. The violins were a nice touch and in general I liked how much this project teetered on post-rock and alt-country but I just wasn’t sold by the instrumentation on display here, nor by the dude’s voice.
I don’t even know what I listened to. This seemed so incomplete. I can see why people regard this album as so different, and the production definitely sounds quite good, but goddamn, there is nothing interesting here.
There’s a lot of good elements and bad elements and it results in an album that’s good, but not great. These guys I just don’t think I’ll ever get. I don’t love their voices individually. When they come together to sing harmonies, it sounds beautiful, but their voices are just too frail for me on their own. So, that’s a very personal gripe. But as for that gripe, they very much so exceed my expectations on this album. While nothing is as ... read more
I re-listened to this thing for the first time in four years, and I can 100% see why I disliked it. I’m keeping that 39 score. This thing is just bad. It’s cool to see how noise music evolved from here, because there’s bits that are straight up noise-rock, but this just feels so half-baked, whiny, and annoying. This album took the masterful debut’s worst elements and packaged them into one album. The first time I ever listened to this thing I remember it feeling like a ... read more
This is an example of an album with a good collection of tracks that as a whole isn’t amazing. This isn’t a bad album by any metric, in fact, it’s quite good, but it kind of comes-and-goes. It’s not like she says nothing at all, but there’s not really any impression here left on me. Plenty of albums from this time were doing a lot more and doing it far better.
I kind of got it and didn’t at the same time. It was a nice listening experience that was paced perfectly, but there were some weaker songs on here, especially in the back half. I also thought the instrumentation could be a little bare boned. I don’t usually give or take away points for lyricism unless the lyricism is significant and here it is. Leonard Cohen was a poet first and foremost and I could really say that on display here.
This was so disappointing, I can’t even lie. This thing sounds rushed and just sounds… bad? Why is no one else talking about this. The production sounds awful. It is HIGHLY possible apple music just butchered this thing, but Jesus, does this sound bad. Jimi is sometimes mixed way too low and sometimes way too high to the point you can hear the peaks in his microphone’s input and it’s so weird and I don’t like it at all. This also just has none of the highs of the ... read more
I have always adored this album. While it has maybe grown off me since I was a kid, this is still PHENOMENAL. Some of the strongest tracks in the Beatles’ discography are on here. What I forgot about it is that it really can be nightmare fuel. I love how the psychedelia sounds so distorted and hollow, especially for tracks like “I Am the Walrus” and “Strawberry Fields Forever”. It also has one of the best closing tracks ever. I heard there’s been a half ... read more
Yeah, this thing is not very good at all. It just totally missed for me. The symphonic stuff seems tacky, most of the songs the band made here kind of just irk me, and everything is really just overshadowed in my mind by “Nights in White Satin”, a part of the final song. That song was the only expectation I had from the band, so I maybe treated this thing unfairly, but this absolutely fails in every metric to live up to that song. A lot of this just seems like milquetoast ... read more
Someone made a review here that this album seems to lose its spark after “Andmoreagain” and I definitely agree. The first few tracks, while not legendary, are pretty whimsical and nice. But then, it just becomes a repeated and tired trope. I was really expecting a lot better from this album. From my knowledge, this isn’t a very popular band, this album is all they really have in terms of popularity, so I was expecting this to be some grand and beautiful statement. But it just ... read more
To this album’s credit, it is very different from the band’s self-titled. Does that make it better though? I would say not. There’s not much memorable here that sticks out. I basically can’t remember how a single song from here sounds after finishing it; a darker atmosphere is not really enough to carry this for me.
Yeah, bossa nova I feel I will just never understand. I really wanted to like this album. That album cover is really cool and made me think this would be super trippy and psychedelic but it wasn’t really that. It just lacks a musical diversity in its track list. It feels like something I could vibe with while studying, but it really isn’t anything more than nice background music, and for that alone I can never give out a good score.
This is categorically “the greatest album ever made”. No one has gotten more praise than this one. Do I agree? Definitely not. Revisiting this thing kind of scratches my head. I just don’t get it. Even applying myself into the context of 1967, The Beach Boys were doing much better things. I guess I just misremembered this album as a lot more musically ambitious. Revolver definitely overtakes this album in that category. Still, it’s a strong album with a strong collection ... read more
