An album that is admittely extremely influential, probably objectively the most influential black metal album of all time. However it is not an album that I myself am particularly fond of. The instrumentals on this album are actually pretty good, the riffs are quite good sounding, and the drumming is also pretty well done. But my god I just absolutely cannot stand Attilas GOD awful vocal performance, like seriously, I can't stop myself from bursting out laughing sometimes out of how simply ... read more
An insanely good sophomore release from the French atmospheric black metal titans Blut Aus Nord. The riffing on this album is so insanely good, very ahead of its time for 1996. The atmosphere is also really great and gives the album even more of an edge. I also really love the vocals on this album.
An unbelievably fun album that will never ever get old. The folk-tinged melodies on this album are fucking wonderful and give so much personality to the music. Valfar's vocals are awesome and super emotive, probably some of my favorite vocals within black metal. The keys are really well done and add a ton of atmosphere to the album. Overall an extremely enjoyable album that is a classic within the genre for a reason.
Some of the most innovative and unique riffing from the Norwegian black metal scene. Boasts some incredible atmosphere too, the keyboards also give it a little extra mph to push the atmosphere even further. The vocals leave a little to be desired but the instrumentals are so great that I don't really mind them.
So glad that I've finally started to get into this band because they are simply fucking incredible. The songwriting is so insanely catchy and engaging, every song has a vocal part that gets stuck in my head. And it does all of this while still having the super crazy neoclassical guitar and keyboard solos that completely blow my mind every time I hear them, Michael Romeo is a genuine fucking wizard. Russel Allen's vocal performance is also so incredibly good, his voice fits perfectly ... read more
@Gaynebula great recommendation, super underrated band! Thought I had already rated this album but apparently not. I always get a little giddy when this band gets mentioned since they hail from my not particularly large hometown here in Sweden and they're one of the only notable metal bands from here. This album does epic doom metal in such an insanely good way, haunting riffs over incredibly good vocals that evoke such an amazing atmosphere. Highly recommend this to everyone.
Thanks to @Gaynebula for the recommendation! Wow, this album is seriously a hidden gem. Frosty and bleak atmospheric/depressive/melodic black metal, fit the current frosty weather perfectly. The melodies on this album are super haunting and work so insanely well with the atmosphere. I tend to not love the kind of shrieky vocals common in DSBM but I don't mind them on this album. I will for sure be returning to this one a lot, one of the strongest atmoblack albums I've heard recently.
I really hope katatonia doesn’t just keep making albums like this because this is criminally mediocre for how talented they are. They seriously need to change their sound because it’s just starting to get stale and samey, Jonas please get your stuff together and carry the band in a different direction because this isn’t it.
When I first heard this album a while ago I wasm't super impressed by it, coming back to it with my tastes today though has completely changed my opinion on it. This album is 30 minutes straight of some of the most pummeling, aggressive, crushing and simply devastating black metal I've ever heard. The riffs are brutal as fuck and seriously sell the evil vibe. The main selling point of this album is probably the just completely unrelenting percussion, blast beats crush your ears ... read more
A super strong and highly enjoyable release from a band that has been going for 35+ years at this point. The guitarwork is easily the strongest part of this album imo, the melodies and riffs hit insanely hard, they're both melodic and melancholic and heavy and groovy. Nick's vocals are great too, though I will say I do prefer his harsh vocals over his cleans. The drums are super tight and snappy as hell The atmosphere of the album is also just awesome. Overall this album is slightly ... read more
The guitar tone on this album is fucking NASTY, it elevates the already incredible riffs to a whole nother level. My only complaint about this album is that I didn't really love the vocals, but other than that this album fucks HARD.
This album has some of the best atmosphere I've heard in black metal in a while. The melodic riffs paired with the synths give it such a menacing and epic vibe that is insanely effective. It's also black metal inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien, so obviously I was gonna love it LMAO.
This album blew away any and all expectations I had. The atmosphere and melodies genuinely make me emotional, amplified even further by it being seasonal depression time for me. Such an insanely good album, already a favorite of mine for albums released this year.
Saw this band live yesterday and even though I've never been a huge fan of them they absolutely kicked ass and made me want to run their discocraphy. I'd only heard two albums from them before (origins and their new one) and none of them had really impressed me (though I did listen to origins like two years ago). This album was absolutely awesome and was HIGHLY enjoyable. The mix between celtic folk and at the gates inspired melodeath works super super well and I'm definitely ... read more
