this album is marginally better than born to die. it's filled with uninspired instrumentation and lyrics that don't land. but the vocal effects might be the worst; every time the reverb and distortion is turned up my ears very much disagree with it. however, there are a few times where songs sound decent across the album, but these are few and far between. the only song i liked was the other woman.
only fallout boy song i’ve listened to
timeless. unique. homely.
this album brings back a childlike wonder and positivity that seemed alien to a now nicotine-addicted 18 year old like myself, but it still felt familiar and somehow fresh.
the instrumentation is so simple, yet it evokes deeper meaning. there’s a continuity akin to a blanket woven together with mismatched fabrics that seemingly, and consciously, work together to form an experience larger than the whole.
it’s a warm, cozy blanket wrapped around you, ... read more
SLIM PICKINS IS A GOOD SONG AND I WILL DIE ON THAT HILL!!!!!!!!!
i feel like sabrina needs to develop her songwriting more in order to evolve as an artist. while there are more highs than lows, it is very noticeable when her writing falls flat.
i’m quite a fan of this south korean dream pop shoegaze
the first four songs of the album are peak but after that i feel like the songwriting and production just becomes inconsistent and generic at points. the biggest slap in the face is in the modern world immediately coming after desire, the drop in quality was kind of shocking on first listen. i don’t know what compelled them to do this but it’s resulted in an album front-loaded with bangers preceding good to meh songs after that which just drag the album down in quality.
having a concept about amy winehouse being a battle rapper is unique to say the least.
lupe combines amazing wordplay with a catchy choruses in a short tracklist. i do feel like the concept could’ve been expanded on more in the album but it doesn’t take away from the quality of it. this is one of the most interesting hiphop albums of the year.
stop reviewing it and listen dickheads
this is like damn. if it was better
what a fucking amazing album to just drop out of nowhere, with multiple relistens i hope it gets better.
edit: (87 -> 91)
damn this album is fucking great
(89 -> 96)
8.9/10: from river to sea
9.6/10: damn this album is fucking incredibly, please give it a listen
this is so far the best pop album of the year, hands down. pure euphoria condensed into a disk.
there are parts of this project where the ideas put forward don’t always stick for me (namely clairbourne practice and piano instrumental), but the overall sound of this album grabs my ears with its noisy distorted guitars and elegant singing. although, at some points it does feels somewhat repetitive with its sound, i don’t think it takes away from the album as much as others that have reviewed it. definitely a good album - it just needed more time in the oven for it to be properly ... read more
westside gunn releases another good project with good material. great production and features that lead to make a solid set of songs. i do feel that some of the material on this could’ve been expanded upon further and tracks do tend to overstay their welcome. that being said, flygod is an awesome god who rarely disappoints.
