200th review yahoo! Perfect timing too, being a long awaited project! We're eating good with this one... So far, its for sure my album of the year. I loved every second of it. I'm glad I already bought my tickets for his show in Montreal, it's boutta be so sick! It doesn't have bangers on the level of The Melodic Blue, but I found it far more consistent. When I first saw the feature list, I was a bit worried, but I honestly think everyone did a great job. Sure ... read more
Thanks @EthanButShorter for the recommendation. In all honesty, I had been putting off my first Death Grips, cause I had a feeling this wasn't going to be for me... While I do admire the boldness and overall quality of the production, I really didn't like the delivery. It was way too shouty for my liking. I did really enjoy Culture Shock though.
Thanks @rbntlly* for the recommendation. I honestly don't know wtf happened with his newer release, but this is great. BLACK METAL brings a super ambient, melancholic feeling through dreamy instrumentation and hazy vocals. While it creates a sense of vulnerability and intimacy, the rawness and lack of mixing in his delivery did sometimes bother me a bit. To me, the album truly shines through its lush production. I also love Joanne's vocals throughout the project.
Through the dynamic production and smooth singing, Lamb's debut EP brings vulnerability and at times a pretty ethereal atmosphere. Initially rated this an 80 due to Overkill sticking in my head, but got tired of it pretty quickly and, looking back at it, it's actually quite a basic track. Same goes for other parts of the project, so I ended up lowering my rating quite a bit. Throughout the EP, Lamb shows great singing ability, but I thought it could feel a bit generic on softer ... read more
Through REDSTAR WU, Genesis Owusu delivers a very well produced album, showcasing a great diversity in sounds and influences, constantly switching between rap, soul and punk from one track to another. What brought it down for me was his delivery on punkier tracks, which really didn't move me. I respect it though.
Through LOVE IS THE NEW GANGSTA, 6LACK delivers a cohesive, atmospheric vibe, showcasing emotional honesty. Overall, I thought it was often a bit too safe and polished, lacking true standout moments. It did get better toward the end, with On Me, RUNNIN LATE FREESTYLE and Bear showcasing smooth instrumentals, rappier deliveries, and nice variations thanks to strong feature performances from Odeal and Mereba.
