I actually enjoyed this album. I can understand how the shift in sound might be polarizing for some but I think they pulled it off fairly well here. Deafheaven vocalist George Clarke teams up with ex-Slipknot drummer Jay Weinberg to make a single that actually goes kinda hard. It’s very clear that Jay is a drummer because they are front and center throughout but guitars are still pretty good and create a dissonant vide through the track. Very different from any project he’s been a part and a very solid single.
Netherwalkers debut doesn’t venture far from the bounds of the current deathcore space. Some tracks can be pretty bland like an opulent pillaging for example and others like the battle of tredem are a bit over the top with the toilet vocals. Some of the other tracks that incorporate the more medieval instruments and choral elements can be really good though like sea of sirens. As a whole it’s a pretty good release but could use some more experimentation and consistency.
This is a super strong release from Angelmaker. They are as heavy as ever while also being as melodic as ever. It’s not super common for a modern deathcore release to say guitars are the highlight but I can confidently say that here. Almost every track has some heavy, yet groovy and memorable guitar riff. It’s still got the angelmaker charm but a lot more tight, technical, and fun.
