When I was first getting into Sade and listening to their discography from start to finish, I admittedly took an embarrassingly long amount of time to even form a single, concise thought regarding Stroger Than Pride, let alone write a whole review on it. I mainly attribute this occurrence to the fact that, when I first heard this album in full, it sort of passed me by without leaving that much of a strong (see what I did there?) impression on me. And although I didn’t necessarily love it ... read more
As I mentioned in my review of Diamond Life, though I showered Sade's debut album with endless praise for its impact and how timeless it continues to be, I do favor Promise just a little more for reasons I'll elaborate on throughout this review. For one, there's definitely an element of nostalgia that plays into this favoritism, mostly because I got into this album and Sade in general at a specific moment in my life that I hold dearly. And so, most of these songs take me back to ... read more
Believe it or not, I’ve rewritten this review one too many times because I never was too satisfied with my commentary on Diamond Life. Considering that Sade is arguably my favorite band to emerge from the eighties, you would think that I have countless things to comment on regarding their debut album, no less, but you would be wrong. To a certain degree, I almost just want to give this album a stamp of approval, pat it on the back for being so timeless and groundbreaking, and then move on ... read more
Throughout my reviews of Simon & Garfunkel’s discography, I’ve alluded, or rather relentlessly persisted, to the fact that I consider Bridge Over Troubled Water to be their best album. Now, to claim this is the duo’s best project to date (I say ‘to date’ like they’re about to release something else, imagine that) is almost too obvious to mention. I mean this in the sense that there are things so undeniably true and irrefutable that it’s just ... read more
To be perfectly candid, I wrote a much harsher review of Breach when it first came out, which is still saved on a Google doc somewhere. However, I admittedly listened to the new Taylor Swift album recently, and, vulgarly speaking, that album was so bad that it made me look back on Breach with a much more forgiving ear. So here we are.
Judging from my overall mixed reception of the two singles from Breach, I wasn't overly sure what to expect from the duo this time around, which is a stark ... read more
I wanted to wait a couple of days before I reviewed this highly anticipated release by T Sweezy. At least, I wanted to wait long enough until I actually heard it more than once, and by doing so, I would hopefully quell the strong impulse to badmouth and absolutely obliterate the album itself. And now that I've sat with the album, begrudgingly so, and viewed the various reactions it has received, I feel more confident in delivering my own opinion rather than regurgitating the commentary ... read more
Although The Contract didn't particularly give me all that many reasons to anticipate the release of yet another single from this upcoming album, I was still fairly expectant of another peek at Breach nonetheless. Some may call it hypocrisy; I call it commitment.
When the teaser for Drum Show was released about a week or so ago (my perception of time isn't accurate, I'm on vacation), I remember thinking, "Oh, great. Next Semester Pt. 2." To this day, I'm not ... read more
I must say I’m mildly surprised by the overly positive reception of this particular album. I realize that sentence alone is a little too broad, but to be more specific, I can hardly fathom how certain people deem Bookends as the duo’s best, or one of their best albums, right in front of Bridge Over Troubled Water’s salad, too.
Given that Bookends is held in such a strong regard, I’ve tried to pinpoint the exact reasons why I may not favor it, as well as to why I ... read more
I’ve been tiptoeing around this review, believe it or not. In my review of Sounds of Silence, I mentioned I tend to have a slight dispute with myself anytime I try to determine whether I like Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme better than the former. And while these two albums are quite similar in various fronts and my preference isn’t necessarily by a long shot, I do tend to favor Parsley just a tiny bit more. In terms of the overall solidness within the tracklist, I believe Parsley ... read more
After making such a transcendental album as All Things Must Pass, the expectations surrounding George's sophomore album might've been set rather high, to say the very least. And the pressure of having to deliver a follow-up project that could measure up to such a groundbreaking debut album would've likely driven many artists to unimaginable levels of madness. But not George Harrison.
And while Living in the Material World does admittedly take some of the same steps that All ... read more
I love how they perfectly encapsulated the overload of cuteness that one feels when encountering a cute cat in a single song. Such a wholesome, and perfectly harmless track with a lovely, lighthearted sound!
I’ve taken some more time to sit with this project and attempt to write a more impartial review so as not to allow my opinions on John Lennon influence my outlook on his music. So if it appears like I’m being harsh or downright unreliable with some of my commentary, just know it could’ve been far more unfiltered than it already is.
Perhaps this will change over time, but throughout the process of listening to the first few solo Beatles material, I’ve gotten the ... read more
I'm not one to review singles, but I will implode if I don't plaster my thoughts somewhere.
I won't lie, when twenty one pilots recycled the eye-closing thing, I felt relieved. I thought that the hiatus that followed the last time they did that would also be incredibly beneficial this time around, especially considering how that seemed to improve the quality of their material back in the day with the release of their best album yet, Trench.
I'd like to mention this ... read more
In my review of Paul McCartney's debut album, I mentioned how his environment and the circumstances surrounding said release ultimately caused the album McCartney to be a rather underminded and downgraded version of what Paul once composed with his former band members during The Beatles. With the drama of the band’s split, the ultimate fallout between the members, and Paul's overall emotional state, it didn't exactly reflect positively on his debut album. I consider this to ... read more
I know I gave Paul Simon a piece of my mind for adding The Sound of Silence in two consecutive albums and even went as far as to regard this as “a little pathetic in my book”, but I can’t exactly say that I would’ve acted all that differently if my song happened to be regaining attention and such an opportunity presented itself to me. And, in any case, the electric version is much better than the acoustic one, so I have that much to compliment him for.
Now, I have a ... read more
Much like any other artist who has had their fair share of controversy and downright problematic behavior, I often struggle to be an unbiased, reliable reviewer regarding their work because any commentary I can offer regarding that person's craft boils down to: "I enjoy this, but..." "It's fine, however..." And proceed to go down a rabbit hole I can never quite make my way around. And for a musician such as John Lennon, who is very transparent and honest about the ... read more
Throughout my reviews of The Beatles' discography, I always liked to reserve a paragraph just to sort of update on what George Harrison was up to on each release. And while it took him quite a while to find his footing and deliver a song that could be mentioned in the same breath as some of his band members' songs, it is undeniable that George made a name for himself as perhaps the most talented Beatle. Now, whether I agree with these allegations is debatable, but I wouldn't want ... read more
First and foremost, I’d like to thank @frogofpog for the recommendation and congratulate both @Blibloblublub, the other member, and him on this release. I’m certainly curious to see what else is in store for this upcoming band!
Truth be told, I totally expected this album to sound like the band Nektar, and I’m sure it was a prominent inspiration for the band throughout their creative process, given their extensive commentary on their discography. However, I must admit the ... read more
Although I defend Paul McCartney to a fault because he’s arguably my favorite Beatle, I will admit that he didn’t exactly handle the release of his debut solo album and the impending Beatles breakup with the utmost grace during these times. Still, it’s known information that he may have had some kind of control problem, and this particular release might single-handedly be the epitome of this behavioral issue that I don’t condone, no matter how much I admire him, believe ... read more
It took me a while to make my way to this particular release back when I was thoroughly obsessed with Simon & Garfunkel. I suppose listening to Bridge Over Troubled Water first ultimately skewed any possibility of me feeling compelled to give their debut album a chance, especially with the prominent narrative about Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. not being particularly mindblowing, all things considered.
However, after certain contemplation and sitting with this project long enough for me to grow ... read more
