I went into this album kind of expecting Yoko Ono to make this album off-putting for me, but she didn't! I enjoyed this one quite a lot! Its a cute album concept, the couples album! John takes lead in some songs while Yoko takes lead in others, so it is fitting for them to share credit here. I preferred Lennon's tracks of course, (Just Like) Starting Over, Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy), Woman, and Watching The Wheels were particular standouts. But Ono holds her own here quite well as ... read more
This is definitely much more rough around the edges than Grace in the songwriting and the feel. But! This is still a strong selection of songs. The first disc which I'm sure was the intended second album My Sweetheart The Drunk, is an excellent body of work, and on its own would prolly receive a 90 score by me. The second disc however is a lot.. worse. A lot worse quality, in both songwriting for the original tracks and the audio quality. I saw it being labeled as lo-fi and I guess that ... read more
This is an album that leaves me very mixed. There are quite a few songs on here that I just did not stay in my head, some of it really felt samey. It has clean production, for the most part, but the songwriting I'm not a fan of for most tracks. The sexual themes in many of them is just something I'm personally averse to, so that's probably affecting my rating here too. There are songs I like though, Pink Pony Club being by far my favourite, along with Femininomenon and HOT TO ... read more
Laufey is one of the most gorgeous singers I have EVER had the pleasure of hearing, and from the start here her voice was already something truly special. Along with her amazing vocals, you have the poignant lyricism, which paints so many pretty and tragic pictures, and the beautiful instrumentation with many points of switch ups that add to the experience, this is such a quintessential jazz pop record. PS, shoutout to my boy Chet Baker getting a shoutout on this record, one of Laufey's ... read more
Innuendo is a masterpiece, and it really deserves the Must Listen label more than A Night at the Opera even does! AOTY in general shafts Queen like what- but anyway.
The story of this album is inextricably linked to the young passing of Freddie Mercury, who died just months after this was released. Considering how sick and frail Freddie was when this was recorded, he did not lose an ounce of his dynamic power, if anything he seems better than before! The writing across the album is powerful as ... read more
Despite me giving this the same grade as my previous Dylan record, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, I do think this is the stronger album of the two! Excellent storytelling, as you'd expect from Bob Dylan, as well as a much more broadly appealing rock sound, with electric instruments! I think he works super well in that context! My main problem is kind of the harmonica, it becomes a bit grating after a decent while, especially on longer tracks like the otherwise fantastic finale Desolation ... read more
This is a rare rap record that really hooked me from the very start and never let go. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did! A big part of that is the production, and the beats, it is all exquisite, and it has a certain energy to it that really hooked me. Always appreciate me some political commentary too, which is a common theme on this album, and I appreciate the different rap styles and voices on the album! Rap is always hit or miss for me, but this is one that I think I could put ... read more
After dumping Ozzy Osbourne for a short while, alongside another like, 47 bajillion different band member changes, both up to this point and to come, its remarkable how they still make such great records. Ronnie James Dio to me is the quintessential metal singer, I think he is WAY better than Ozzy, and I'm sad they didnt just keep Dio, as much as I respect Ozzy. But yea, powerful instrumentation, much more fantastical imagery at play, this to me is among Black Sabbath's finest. And I ... read more
I hear so many negative opinions about Coldplay. I remember them from when I was young, and not having a strong opinion on their music, but they seem polarising today? Which, from what I'm hearing here, I don't get. This is unequivocally a fantastic album, meaningful art pop, with great lyricism! Violet Hill I appreciate a lot being an anti-war protest song, on top of being an amazing song on its own merits. I'm also quite vulnerable to the feels, and that's something I ... read more
The funny meme album cover
Also, this was kinda lukewarm for me, I like the songs that were already hits and I mostly knew, tho I like Only In Dreams as an extended outro, but I felt not a lot with the other tracks. At least its a funny album cover
I'm having a hard time putting words to my feelings about this album. Laufey's voice is enchanting, definitely hear a lot of Chet Baker influence, another singer I adore. I loveee delicate and soothing vocals, and she absolutely delivers that, while also being able to be powerful as well! The theming and stories being told kinda hit me in the soul! like, Snow White especially for me, but most songs are super eloquent and well written. And, I love jazz, but Ive never listened to a ... read more
I went a bit out of order on this trio of Genesis albums, oopsie! I went to Selling England By the Pound first, and then Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and now Foxtrot. Anyway, uhhh, this and all 3 of these albums are exceptional prog rock albums. For Foxtrot in particular my notes are, holy shit, Supper's Ready is an INSANE track, 23 minutes long with so much complexity and changes in tone. The rest of the album is great too, but really it's all a prelude to that bombastic finish.
I really wanted to like this album but the audio quality is just, terrible. I can't really excuse it in this case because its so egregious, some songs like Heroin are downright unlistenable for me. just,, even for the time period it is so bad, why is it this way?? Thats the only thought I had when listening.
One word summary: boring. I was bored for the entire listen, it never grabbed me for even a single song. I like contemporary folk music, but I feel like the writing wasn't there, and the singing definitely wasn't there. On the latter half I was just kinda waiting for it to be over. There's prolly an audience for this but I'm not it.
Honestly I never had the best opinion of modern pop music; I still don't really. But, this gave me a bit of hope for the modern sound. I enjoyed this quite a bit! I like Lorde's vocal style, and the songwriting is relatable and nice. Especially knowing she was still in school making this album, at only 16. Really impressive, hehe. My favourites here are Tennis Court, 400 Lux, Ribs, Buzzcut Season, and Still Sane. It's hard to put into words what I like about this album, cuz ... read more
Where do I even begin here? I don't think I've ever been as blindsided by a record like I have with this one; It wasn't on my radar whatsoever. I planned on skipping to When The Pawn., as its Fiona Apple's highest rated album, but I decided on a whim to go through them in chronological order; What I found here absolutely floored me. The vocal depth is among the best I've heard, her style changes so often through the album, yet it maintains the same insane quality ... read more
Going into this, I didn't have much expectation for it honestly, because I straight up didn't know enough about Rage Against The Machine; I was under the impression they were the archetypical metal group. Instead, I got hit with rap metal! Ive never heard rap metal before, and this being my first time, holy shit this is a treat! Metal and rap as genres on their own I have mixed history with, but combining the two really enhances the strengths of both. I'm also a very ... read more
First stop on my Elton John relistens journey, Empty Sky! My first time listening to this record, I remember not being impressed, but with hindsight now, it is much better than I remember it being! You can hear the essence of Elton's future music sprouting here, and though it seems like he doesn't always have confidence in his singing on this record, he does great! And the songwriting was immediately all here, it is just as good as what would follow it. Empty Sky, Val-Halla, Sails, ... read more
This is just an absolutely lovely soft rock piece, with lots of meaningful songwriting. It's quite a lot like All Things Must Pass I think, but I think that is also a positive thing, because I think both of them are just fantastic. Harrison probably is my favourite Beatle after a lot of consideration because of albums like this, it is just such a pleasant feeling hearing these.
This is definitely the best prog rock I've ever heard!! Yes didn't invent the genre but, the title track here is probably the definitive prog rock song *ever* made, youre really taken on a journey on this album, largely thanks to it! Not that And You and I and Siberian Khatru are any slouches in that department either though! For an album that technically only has 3 tracks, it is filled to the brim.
