Was very surprised to notice the singles were my least favourite songs on the album! It's a very pleasant surprise as I believed the singles lacked originality and Alexandra Savior's voice didn't bring much to the table, being the weakest link on the tracks. However, the other songs are way better in terms of instrumentation, but also overall synergy. Alexandra's voice blends in perfectly with the instruments in such a smooth way, that it is quite reminiscent of Chant jazz. ... read more
Matt Maltese has definitely polished and matured his sound and lyrics respectively on his newest album. For instance, the use of strings in many songs definitely elevates his melodies to another level, which also makes his signature witty lyrics stand out more.
A bunch of songs on the album use the crescendo effect, which makes for a lot of ear candy, but I can understand how some people may get tired of it or find it repetitive. Personally I can find comfort in predictability, so it ... read more
yall tripping this is his best, the raw emotion, the simple but effective chord progression, the soundscape...
Unsure of why he released Wally and Beanie for the third time, but Still In Love is genuinely another breathtaking song in terms of feels, production and melody. Great vibes overall
I thought i was having a panic attack but i was just listening to motorbike.
That damn fill at the start of the song is soooo good. Ofc the song itself is gorgeous too
Feels like when you make a playlist out of your favorite songs from your favorite album; it's all killer, no filler. I cant stress this enough, the production is mind blowing. The sound of this album is gorgeous but it doesn't overshine the melodies that will NOT leave your mind. I have been listening to this EP since the day it released, and i doubt i will ever stop coming back to it.
imo excellent but still not as good as his other few songs; the fact that the track is only two or so minutes long really leaves you longing for more (which would be fixed if this song was entitled as an interlude). Still the production is breathtaking, and i know i will be returning to listen to it often
The year is 2010. I have trouble finding sleep so my dad tries to find ways to help me out and gives me his old record player. Along with it, he gives me a CD of a band I know I like because when friends come over, he plays that band’s song I like about wishing to be special.
Oh boy was I not ready for the sounds I was going to hear. This record is probably the one that feels the closest to me, on a personal level. I’ll spare the details about the musical genius that makes this ... read more
Ok i know this rating is controversial but music is subjective so oh well
Humbug starts off with a bang and slowly fades to more meticulously crafted masterpieces. Being a rather different entry to their discography after “Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not” and “Favorite Worst Nightmare”, I understand how some people can come to dislike this album as it really is the turning point of their career, also having nothing to do with their later work. ... read more
What a debut album. I bought it only knowing a few of their songs, but I was still very pleasantly surprised. The amount of instrumental detail in each song is quite astonishing, which is emphasized by the very crisp production of the album overall. Even though I’m a sucker for this genre, the reason I didn't rank it at 100 is because the second side doesn’t match the greatness of the first side. It feels like the energy goes down a bit but without keeping as much emotion as it ... read more
Feels like a warm hug from a very close friend. What really stands out in this album as a whole, are the great floaty guitar lines and the songwriting. This particularly shows in songs like “Hot Knifer” or “Tommy’s Party”. What I especially love about this album is the dichotomy that separates the first six songs from the three last. While you can hear the fun personality of the band within their first bops, what’s astonishing is their grand projects that ... read more
This album is good at what it does, but it shouldn’t be listened to as a mac demarco album. Yes, it feels like “Here Comes the Cowboy” with the vocals stripped out of the songs, but it gives the songs a whole new meaning that the listeners can make up for themselves. That being said, some songs are indeed hard to remember, making the album less revisitable.
Vancouver 2 and 3 go hard tho.
This is the album that scratches the itch.
I find it truly amazing how humans can come up with stuff like this.
Despite the clear difference between the explosive “Catalyst” and the introspective “Unravel” for instance, this album feels more like a story than a compilation of songs, and none of them feel out of place. The fact that this is a debut album is also mind boggling to me. I cannot stress over how good this album is, especially for how so few people know about ... read more
