Doesn't stray away from what makes Westside Gunn so good which doesn't let it score any higher for me personally, but I can happily deal with it regardless.
Does very little for me. And sadly that's been the pattern for Mac's recent output. It's not "unlistenable" by any stretch of the imagination, but I have absolutely no desire to listen to this album ever again.
Been feeling this way since Cowboy in 2019. I wouldn't necessarily mind the slower paced songs that have become his staple for the last 7-8 years, I absolutely loved This Old Dog, but the continuous stripped back nature of a lot of these tracks doesn't ... read more
I hate that Funny Ways has been rated the highest song solely because of it's usage in a Madvillain track cause the best song ont his album is comfortably Alucard. While not a prog album or a prog band I find myself coming back to that often, this album is still pretty good and it's unsurprising that it still has a decent cult following. Just not really the kind of prog I resonated with.
Rewriting this review because I have grown considerably to this album, which I kinda expected, but it's become easily one of my favourites, if not a contender for my favourite of the year so far. The more I listen to this album the more I consider it a worthy sequel/successor/happy ending to Some Rap Songs. Easily the best album Earl has put out since SRS and proof once again that mental illness doesn't mean you make better art.
I'd like to put into words finally how god damn good this album is. Because usually I wouldn't have such a short review of an album I've rated this highly.
I never really gave Clipse a listen in any capacity before this album, and to be brutally honest? I only was intrigued to give this album a listen because of the whole fiasco regarding Kendrick's verse in chains and whips. As well as seeing if Malice (or as he was known at the time, No Malice) still had The bars to keep ... read more
Been on a bit of a Westside Gunn binge as of recent. Love his style but potentially his biggest ""flaw"" in my opinion is that if you've listened to one Westside Gunn album, you've listened to most of them. But honestly? I like it a lot so I'm happy to listen to anything he puts out. Felt similarly about MF DOOM too.
What the hell man. I never thought that any rap album this (relatively) early into Hip Hop's conception could feel like a love letter and an amalgamation of the genre but also it's earlier influences as well is absolutely astounding. Every time I clocked an interpolation or a reference to a previous song or album I found myself shaking my head in disbelief. How the fuck did this come out in 1998? An astonishing album. Usually I let personal enjoyment be the defining factor of what ... read more
Really really love the tone of the guitars. Very obviously inspired by Black Sabbath, but I'm not complaining. Asteroid is a killer track and easily my favourite off the album.
An unbelievably dense, layered, maximalist album from a dude that only 8 years prior was writing KSI diss tracks. Melodically beautiful and sonically ambitious but it's ambition is maybe faltered by the fact that you kind of need to listen to it as an entire package rather than picking and choosing particular songs. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it then becomes a commitment to listen to the album. If you don't mind that, then this album is a well-executed ... read more
Finally. Some good fucking food. A short but beautifully crafted album full of amazing tracks that stand on their own just as well as they stand as one sole concept. Really really good, and comfortably my favourite of this year so far.
Can't believe I hadn't rated it yet. Rest in peace to the big man Brian. Thanks for the bangers.
My guy was playing 5/4 and 7/4 bangers on the streets of new york in the 50s and accompanying rhythms that would make any drummer froth at the mouth like it was nothing. All time legend.
Best Gizz album for a long time. Definitely think they put all their eggs in one basket putting out probably the best three tracks out as singles, but everything else is decent albeit a bit forgettable. The soundscape is definitely the albums strongest asset. The orchestal parts, especially on the better tracks (Deadstick is an ultra banger) really bring the songs into a different dimension. I hope Gizz can continue with this sound for future albums and create something amazing. Still though, ... read more
Heard this album years ago on the knowledge that the title track was about my favourite artist of all time, Nick Drake, and I was hooked from there. For only being 35 minutes this album packs so much variety, beauty and emotion. I'd Rather Be The Devil has some really cool ambient passages, Over The Hill is pure british folk beauty, and Go Down Easy almost made me spend an unholy amount of money on a fretless bass despite the fact that I'm not even that good on bass. That and other ... read more
An album that touches both ends of the quality spectrum flawlessly. The best moments of this album are some incredible, heavy, hype inducing blasts from the past, and guitar riffs that sound out of this world, but the worst moments are shockingly shite lyrical content, hip hop passages that sound like parody, and features from rap legends that really shouldn't be there at all. This album, despite its highlights, is so disjointed and shifts in quality so quickly from one end to the other ... read more
Certain track weigh it down a bit but the best this album has to offer is beautiful, rich and descriptive lyrically. Carry On might be my favourite on this album.
So sweet and so infectiously enjoyable that you might become diabetic after listening.
