This felt like listening to an uninspired artist attempting a late-2000s Gaga impersonation. It is her most generic melodically and especially lyrically. I had a hard time refraining from rolling my eyes at some of these formulaic ABC lines that you'd hear at your average retail store in 2017. Surprised and saddened by how unexciting I found most of these tracks, considering how much I usually enjoy records in this vein. With the exception of a few songs, the electronic production fails to evoke any kind of response from me, while Eartheater’s drowned-out vocals and nondescript lyrics equally lack the impact I was hoping for. However, I can’t deny how hard Prodigal Self, Supersoaker, and Fontanel go. Just wish the whole album had the same effect.
Vulnicura’s sole truly strong moments lie in the unique production choices for which Björk and Arca are known. Sadly, these ear-grabbing musical ideas are too randomly scattered and infrequent for the songs to become something one looks forward to listening to again.
