Eminem - Recovery
63

I was never really into Eminem. He undoubtedly built a legacy in rap and left an everlasting mark on music, whether you like it or not. When he veers into more personal territory without forcing that persona filled with jokes, that's when I can enjoy his work more. Recovery has those moments, but they seem rarer than common. Some choices are quite questionable, and it didn't excite me much.

Lady A - Need You Now
64

Dips into the country trend that was on the rise at the time, and there isn't much that stands out. At least it maintains consistency throughout the album and features some intriguing instrumentals.

Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster
84

"The Fame Monster" is an extension of "The Fame", but not just a deluxe version with fillers. It's genuinely an extension and MUCH better, and I already think "The Fame" is a good album. "Bad Romance" and "Dance In the Dark" are epic, so massive and so Lady Gaga. The lyrics deliver all the eccentricity and strength of the artist. There are a few lighter moments, but they can be quite enjoyable, like the hit "Telephone", a collaboration ... read more

Taylor Swift - Fearless
73

MARATONA AOTY GRAMMY - 52nd Grammy Awards

“Fearless” é um álbum country pop coeso, conseguindo seguir na proposta durante o álbum todo e sendo competente no que se propõe. Não vou entrar na questão de falta de maturidade, até porque ela era bem nova e nem faria sentido analisar dessa forma. Dentro do possível as letras são bem escritas e relatam de forma convincente todo o drama, às vezes bem exagerado, de ser ... read more

Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D.
45

"Kill 'em with the sound" is a very accurate statement. Man, this is REALLY bad, no joke. It's bad to the extent that it made me question whether the ones I thought were good are actually good or if it was just nostalgia getting to me. Everything that comes after 'I Gotta Feeling' is an attempt at making electronic pop for parties, with lousy rhymes, lazy production, and heavy doses of embarrassment.

Beyoncé - I AM...SASHA FIERCE
62

This concept it's a bit confusing because this alter ego doesn't offer much that's different from what Beyoncé had already presented. It's as if she divided it into ballads and dance tracks, with Sasha Fierce being the dance persona. The first part is a pretty watered-down pop/R&B, with "Halo" standing out. The second part falls quite a bit, mainly due to the generic lyrics that might make you cringe as you listen. It's an album full of hits, and perhaps it's remembered for ... read more

Dave Matthews Band - Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King
58

Everything here screams "cover band". There are good intentions, and the songs are enjoyable in their own way, but there's no personality, it feels like any dad's band. Each song seems to be taken from a different artist, and even the sound isn't consistent between them, not to mention it feels dated.

Lady Gaga - The Fame
76

Something important to consider about Lady Gaga's debut is that, although it didn't reinvent the wheel, it was an album that had a significant influence when it was released. This kind of music made a strong comeback at that time and brought us an avalanche of generic imitations. Gaga manages to stand out because this project is entirely her, something authentic that, even in its more frivolous moments, never fails to show it's unique. With all we've come to know about pop music in recent ... read more

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
82

MARATONA AOTY GRAMMY - 51st Grammy Awards

Fergie - The Dutchess
68

This would've been a great chance for Fergie to separate herself from the Black Eyed Peas and do something more unique. Yet, she keeps Will.i.am involved in everything, which I just can't fathom. It's fun and better than anything BEP put out afterward. Still, it ends up as another collection of pop songs with ups and downs, but not bringing much individuality to the table.

Nelly Furtado - Loose
82

Nelly Furtado's transition from folk songbird to party girl in the 'Loose' era wasn't well-received by the purists, but almost 20 years later (!!!), hits like 'Promiscuous' and 'Say It Right' are trending again with a new generation of listeners, and you can be sure Nelly did more than right. Her collaboration with Timbaland marked an era and influenced music that followed. Some tracks might come off as fillers and aren't as captivating as others that were worked on. But overall, it's a ... read more

Gwen Stefani - Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
80

Gwen Stefani's first solo project is energetic, maybe even a bit too much, and downright frenetic. The first four songs are bop after bop. The artist brings her full personality into it, creating something that's entirely her own, and it doesn't resemble No Doubt or any other female singer of the time in any way. I believe that's what makes 'Love Angel Music Baby' so distinctive. Despite all the occasional excesses that can be a tad irritating, she still manages to maintain a mark that's ... read more

Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway
80

"Breakaway" is Kelly Clarkson's second studio album, but it's the one that brought her to the world's attention, delivering hits like "Since U Been Gone", "Because of You" and the title track. What's most striking here is how Clarkson breathes life into these songs and how this powerhouse singer + rock instrumentation match worked perfectly. The album follows a somewhat formulaic pattern, but it manages to break away (sorry) from that because the artist puts ... read more

Herbie Hancock - River: The Joni Letters
68

MARATONA AOTY GRAMMY - 50th Grammy Awards

Zach Bryan - Boys Of Faith
80

He's the GOAT and keeps proving it. Dropping another EP like it's no big deal, Zach Bryan showcases all his best artist traits, and even in just a few tracks, he leaves his personality stamped. I'm going to listen to this a lot.

Cassadee Pope - Thrive
63

I went in expecting some country, and I got pop-rock. Maybe inspired by the genre's return to the top of the charts, Cassadee goes back to her roots with "Thrive". It's quite harmless for the most part and can make for a good time listening. The thing is, bringing this sound in 2021 without sounding dated requires a bit more effort, and that seems to be missing here. It ends up feeling like a run of the mill 2000s album released way too late in 2021.

Kacey Musgraves - Pageant Material
81

"Pageant Material" is Kacey's most country-rooted album, filled with beautiful melodies and razor-sharp lyrics. If you don't like this album, you probably don't like country music, plain and simple. What makes this record exceptional is how Kacey manages to step away from the commercial country that was dominating the charts at the time, without completely succumbing to the easily digestible pop-country trends. She holds onto her roots while still sounding contemporary. This one's for ... read more

Ruston Kelly - Dying Star
72

There's nothing out of the ordinary here, but it's a well-done ordinary. It has some more inspired moments, and the sound is more enjoyable than much of the country music that's topping the charts these days.

The Chicks - Taking The Long Way
81

MARATONA AOTY GRAMMY - 49th Grammy Awards

As The Chicks viram tudo o que construíram desmoronar após sua declaração anti-governo Bush, e não consigo imaginar o quão difícil deve ter sido passar por isso. A melhor representação desse período tumultuado está no álbum vencedor do Grammy, "Taking the Long Way", onde elas desabafam de maneira magistral. O álbum mantém a qualidade que o trio ... read more

Arlo Parks - My Soft Machine
75

There's something in Arlo Parks' vocals that's so beautiful and makes you want to keep listening non-stop. I believe that if I listen to this album more times, it will grow on me, but on the first impression, it already left a positive mark. Although it flowed well for me, some moments felt a bit monotonous, which didn't elevate the work as much for me. Still, it's a good album, with highlights like "Purple Phase" and "Room (Red Wings)".
