Ninajirachi - I Love My Computer
75

girl edm is beautiful. not my typical wheelhouse. and i think like edm will always just sound a bit generic to me.

but this was cool! especially girl edm about liking girls and being a weird fucking nerd kid. good summer choice methinks

faves: iPod Touch, Fuck My Computer, CSIRAC, Delete, All I Am, It's You

KANA-BOON - 僕がCDを出したら [Boku ga CD wo dashitara]
71

this was one of the first j-rock records i discovered as a young girl. it's a bit surreal to look back on. good stuff :3

faves: nai mono nedari/track 1, mitakunai mono/#4, sakura no uta/#6

Jane Remover - Revengeseekerz
91

holy shit.

you kinda just have to witness this for yourself. would not recommend if overstimulated.

rage/edm made by a nerd for people with attention issues. fucking generational

faves: Psychoboost, Experimental Skin, angels in camo, Dreamflasher, Dancing with your eyes closed, Professional Vengeance, JRJRJR

Summoning - Old Mornings Dawn
76

somehow making black metal atmospheric/-gaze/post- just makes it make sense to me. i love summoning's... druidic? vibes that they show off on OMD.

kinda got formulaic to me halfway in, and i couldn't help but chuckle at the use of... that one stock screech sound effect people use as if it belonged to a bald eagle when it doesn't? but quite solid.

THIS is the soundtrack to a wistful journey through the woods, against the powers of nature and time.

Headache - The Head Hurts but the Heart Knows the Truth
67

this might be the only time i let use of ai slide because of how specifically effective it is here.

layered... spoken word (ig it is that even though it's an ai) over mostly unchallenging but pleasant instrumentals. i liked it. not my usual wheelhouse but some repetitions are gonna stick with me :)

Panopticon - Kentucky
71

i am not particularly into most forms of black metal. nor am i big on bluegrass. but godDAMN if this album doesn't synthesize those things pretty well. and the historical inspiration too!

this record has such intense rage and love in its heart -- you can hear the songs and souls of the exploited come through despite the destruction of lifeworlds (which is reflected by the black metal sections).

the only place i found the album particularly lacking would be the lyrics, and the length of ... read more

Zorrovian - Lost and Found
69

some really groovy little songs here. i enjoyed putting this on while installing steam games onto my laptop :3

Cynthoni - Draining Love Story (In The Eyes Of Cynthoni)
78

it's the irresistible, entrancing dnb that takes you on a journey through someone's mental world. it's the club-like beat of Lexapro Doesn't Work that make you want to dance in interstellar space. it's the vibe of coming out of dissociation, of trying to make something out of the remains. it's the somber, knowing, almost hopeful catharsis of Cynthoni of Flames.

cynthoni made a wonderful album here. a wonderful introduction to their work indeed.

The Mountain Goats - The Sunset Tree

not my usual speed. a very touching record that found me at a very good time.

faves: This Year, Dinu Lupatti's Bones, Pale Green Things

Icarus The Owl - Love Always, Leviathan
67

a pretty solid math-emo record that might grow on me.

i found some of the lyrics to be very poetic and powerful, encapsulating much of my love for this genre.

at other times the lyrics felt like... self-pitying bravado. in which case, their implied intensity wasn't reinforced by the instruments.

is this a thing in the genre as a whole? definitely. but my experience comes primarily from the more cryptic writing of anthony green. so... that is my bias.

i think the mathiness sometimes ... read more

Oklou - choke enough
78

a very unique, quiet-core(?) album that explores some very interesting and unique textures. it's so original, we don't often get stuff like this in pop i feel.

oklou doesn't explore as deeply the ideas that are seen on here as i semiconsciously expected. i didn't really hear any grand or stunning crescendos.

choke enough is more like an anthology of interesting and investing soundscapes rather than that traditional, "chorus-chorus-bridge-chorus" format we're ... read more

Jane Remover - Census Designated
89

put into words and music what i have never been able to when processing my trauma.

thank you, jane. you are one of the greatest artists active right now

Alcest & Les Discrets - Split EP
73

some good Les Discrets pieces — a band that i never really chose over my goats, Alcest — plus a song from Écailles de lune and a stunning (original) outro track.

i'm a woman of simple pleasures. fantastical-sounding, wandering, "druidic" music is one of them.

a great little listen for someone looking for a "bite-sized" little piece of music this winter.

especially if you live in a place that snows — or at least (like the midwest) gets ... read more

journal - Split
68

praise be to the youtube music thinking-for-you algorithm gods for giving this one to me fresh off of Wake.

seahorsechoke is what you'll probably come here for but otherwise it's just a solid lo-fi sounding emo record.

faves: watching a car crash and feeling your head trauma; hermosa, the only one i love

Hail the Sun - Wake
69

merry crimble! :3333

i feel as though fate had arranged it for me to like this album a lot, but... it didn't click for me like i expected. immediately, i mean.

Wake is an impressive album that i think will grow on me.

but i'm not going to lie about how i feel, and would like to sit on it for the time to come.

what i CAN say is that this album kept flinging me around to sonic places i was not expecting.

like. exhibit A. that breakdown on Cosmic Narcissism? did not anticipate at ... read more

Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde
84

Hot damn... I think this is my favorite Alcest record yet.

It's effortless, blending multiple styles that shouldn't work together, but do (a commonality in their work, it seems)...

It feels like a meditative, sometimes desperate, sometimes overwhelming swim through a sea of noise...

And yet there is so much beauty here.

Those acoustic breaks. The deliberate, patient pacing (which I do not always have a taste for). The clean-overdrive harmonies.

Often times I was stopped in my ... read more

Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling
83

Hot fucking damn. This album rules.

I had only given Mogwai brief consideration, as post-rock is not my typical wheelhouse (the closest I've gotten is Alcest and some Tortoise).

But this album FUCKS.

Like Maybeshewill's self-titled debut, there is no need for words in a work that speaks (or... smells) plenty loud with its sound.

THIH is a sonic journey, and I mean that fully aware of the fact that's been said by every prog enjoyer ever. It's true here.

There's ... read more

Oneohtrix Point Never - Tranquilizer
85

When I listened to Replica by Oneohtrix Point Never, I found it to lack a certain substance that his other work tended to have.

Was it because I came in expecting a synthy, """orthodox""" ambient record, that did not demand a meticulous and subtle patience? Probably.

But my point is: Tranquilizer addresses that tension for me. In the simplest terms, I find the tracks way more interesting — and here Daniel is going wild.

Tranquilizer is energetic and ... read more

Yo La Tengo - Painful
81

Measured yet heavy, patient yet involved, "Painful" is a lovely introduction to a band that has long fascinated me, Yo La Tengo.

After having only heard Nowhere Near and Big Day Coming, I was surprised to hear them start shredding on From a Motel 6.

And though I have a preference for the quieter tracks, nothing really feels out of place.

As its title implies, it all conveys this certain painfulness — an indirect feeling, a heartache maybe, of dreams unfulfilled and people ... read more

Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
87

I listened to this album on digital and didn't originally know that the older version of Sweetness wasn't originally on the album.

To me it is the true closing track to the album — more raw and powerful than the one on Bleed American.

God, what a fucking album
