Stereolab meticulously crafts us a utopian world, each track prefiguring a collapse of a system. Dots and Loops was the future we were promised. Although, its prophecy is yet to be fulfilled, this album remains a statement for hope. Musically speaking, its soundscapes is undeniably rich and distinct—as if each stem used could be heard clearly. Whirlpool is a perfect mix of dreampop and shoegaze that doesn’t try to replicate the cocteau twins or mbv’s mellow whimsy. Instead, Chapterhouse produces a sonically rich interpretation of the genre. What I like so much about Whirlpool is how it is able to entrance you with its baggy groove and ethereal melodies.

What really captivated me in listening to this album was the cover art; its colors radiated a lost nostalgia that was comforting. Its composition carefree but intentional. ‘Wild is the Wind’ is such an experience of an album; Simone’s daring vocals, poetic storytelling and diverse instrumentations are all aspects that makes this album so great - no wonder that she remains to be one of the most influential artists of all time! And to think that these were “leftovers” from Simone’s last albums add up to its fascination.
