It’s impressive how Yoasobi manages to make three and a half minutes feel like five. I think that’s in part to the sheer amount of ideas that have been shoved in here, which is way too many. The chorus is also just, not very catchy? It’s a really long and uninterrupted melody that goes on forever. It tries to jam in like 6 different hooks, which just ends up diluting the power of all of them. I’ve listened to this chorus 20 times and I ... read more
there is a very real possibility that a song or two from this album gets big outside of japan off tiktok or something. it's a consistently upbeat album with a lot of fun choruses that also contains some western pop sensibilities to give it an easy international appeal
there's a couple anime songs on this with millions of plays that obviously loom large but then there's a bunch of better songs that only have like 15k which is a shame. pelican fanclub have mastered making their accessible, mainstream-friendly brand of j-rock still hit hard via emotional singing, mastery of effects, and just really really catchy choruses

Single review for the new Natori song, Friday Night. Natori is a j-pop musician who was a breakout superstar last year from his song Overdose, and has been rapidly rising in popularity. This is his 3rd song. Ever. He’s gotten big quick.
Just like Overdose, this song feels heavily geared for tiktok. It’s built upon a smooth and melodic chorus that the rest of the song feels like it’s rushing to get back to. That chorus melody is pretty good but ... read more
this is his best in a while, really tight and consistent and doesn't sound like he's overlaying 5 random samples on top of each other for half the album.
here to say this album is perfectly fine indie rock but these dudes are super fun live
this is fine enough musically and an improvement from the last album but this is so unambitious. outside of the title track they're trying nothing
yknow how people talk about shooting for the moon? yuragi shoots about five feet in the air here. like yeah, they clear it, but that doesnt mean anything
if any genre could be AI generated it's this kind of incredibly corporate soulless j-pop
essential listening for AKFG fans as even though its a b-sides comp its better than literally every release that came after it except for magic disk
go seek out the live versions that come at the end of the CD theyre really fun

Classic review for a modern classic, Odoriko by Vaundy. Vaundy is an artist I’ve done a full review on, he’s been rising rapidly in the j-pop scene, and I feel like this is easily his best song.
J-pop as a whole recently has been leaning more and more towards big epic sounds. You want a fast, energetic chorus that's able to grab people on first listen. With that said, this song is the antithesis to all that. It’s catchy, but it takes some time to ... read more
of the five vocaloid albums i've heard this year this is definitely in the top five
mikazuki bigwave "don't use the exact same breakdown, drop, and sound effects on literally every single song" challenge (FAILED YET AGAIN)

Every song on this album is about one minute long. It only feels right to do a one minute review.
This album has some heaters. DADADA! (the song) and ahaha both pack a powerful punch. They grab you on first listen and are short and addicting enough to keep you coming back again and again. The problem is this album doesn’t have quite enough songs that do that.
Too many of these songs start slow and either don’t build up until the very very end, or ... read more
This is an interesting record as it’s his only album not released via a major label. It’s also considerably more hip hop focused than a lot of his later works. I mean he is called tofuBEATS after all, not tofuelectropop. Tofubeats usually draws some pretty good features and this is no exception with contributions from Punpee of Oddtaxi fame and SKY-HI, notable for naming like his 9th album “The Debut”.
A lot more of the hype fun songs are shoved towards the front of the ... read more
If you were looking for more of that Tofubeats j-pop you’ve got it here. In fact this is his most straight pop record. The problem with it is that it’s not written as well. There’s simply less good songs here. He takes less risks which means there’s also less bad songs, but everything just kinda falls into a pit of being ok but not really good. He also commits fully to the features here as almost every track has one, far more than his previous work.
Dance&Dance is ... read more
