Between one-minute long songs having a slowed down chorus as an outro, two interludes on a 20 minute album, drowsy atmosphere with no real reason to connect with it, and at times downright cringey bars, it's really hard to find myself enjoying this album. I really feel like the style from tracks like stickerz and on god? could develop into a really interesting Cloud-R&B style, but when the songs barely have more than one verse or are just downright a slog to get through at two minutes, I ... read more
Considering that Butterfly Net is far and away my favorite song on Desire and Weyes Blood's latest album has been my favorite album of the 2020s so far, I really don't know why I have a hard time enjoying this remix.
I think the biggest thing for me is that the singing feels really rushed for lack of a better word. In the original track the pace Caroline sings with gives every line of the song a sky to fly high in, whereas in the remix every line feels packed in like sardines. Overall though, ... read more
A true artist's artist, Smino refines his free-flowing, pure-fun style of hip-hop into something more on Luv 4 Rent.
The albums start out remarkably strong with the four track run from No L's to Ole Ass Kendrick, featuring Smino's trademark wordplay and wild vocal inflections over a variety of beats with fantastic featured verses from J. Cole on 90 Proof and Doechii on Pro Freak. After this lightning start the album slows down for the atmospheric Louphoria, which along with other space-y cuts ... read more
A very solid project that ultimately suffers from the issue that a lot of projects in the Alchemist/Griselda/Jazz Rap (there's gotta be a better definition of this) vein do for me, where a lot of songs are good, but are hard to separate. woods' pen game does an excellent job at holding a very solid pace across the whole album, but memorable highlights are few and far between.
Favorite Tracks: Soft Landing, Babylon By Bus, Year Zero, FaceTime
Listened to this while playing Minecraft and still got the complete understanding that it's a masterpiece
A tight and enjoyable synthpop record, plain and simple.
Favorite Track: Will You Dance?
Other Great Tracks: Young and Dumb, Recreational Love, Runaway, Please Take Me Home, We're Coming To You
Least Favorite: Lovey Dovey
Nearly five years from release, this remains as one of Simbi's most potent and finest tracks.
Slomo into Star Roving is one the the greatest 1-2 punches to open an album that I've ever heard, absolutely transcendental stuff. Sugar for the Pill is also one of the catchiest shoegaze songs out there, everything about that track is flawless.
Favorite Track: Sugar for the Pill
Other Great Ones: Slomo, Star Roving, Everyone Knows, Go Get It, Falling Ashes
Least Favorite Track: No Longer Making Time
A very solid dream pop/post-rock album that just suffers from not being overly memorable like Slowdive's previous works.
George Clanton continues the magic on his third solo album, crafting a fantastic blend between 90s pop nostalgia, chillwave, and futuristic psychedelia. Ooh Rap I Ya contains a lot more "familiar" tunes than Slide or 100% Electronica, which should give it a much wider appeal than his previous albums. Also, I Been Young is one of the best songs of the decade so far, such a hooky song.
Favorite Track: I Been Young
Other Great Tracks: Everything I Want, Justify Your Life, Punching ... read more
If prime David Byrne time traveled to 2007 NYC, this would be the album he'd make. One of the finest albums of the 21st century and an instant classic upon first listen.
