Michael Jackson - Thriller
95

Legendary LP, but probably one if the biggest victims of overplay for me. Beat it and Thriller are fantastic tracks which I've heard probably a bit too much in my own lifetime. Somehow I've don't have that issue with Billie Jean, might be the most timeless song of the entire album. It's not the most cohesive album, but with a tracklist this stacked and this influencial it's hard to knock it down.

JPEGMAFIA - EXPERIMENTAL RAP

I couldn't finish the album. I didn't want his recent cornyness to taint my view of this project, since I've been a fan of his previous work (Mainly LP!, Scaring the hoes and ILDMLFY), but I have a hard time clicking with it. It just seem like more of what he's done before, but with a feeling he's trying way too hard. His flows are very repetitive and the lyrics more of that cornyness he's been pushing recently. The production has some good elements here and there ... read more

Absolute earworm of an album, I haven't been able to get it out of my head for the last few days. I might have to finally check out wallsocket since this is some great feel good electropop

Grommet - Half in Red
88

Was sent this by my sister, and it's actually really good! Very Deftones inspired but it doesn't prevent it from knocking your socks off. I'll keep them on my radar

J. Cole - The Fall-Off
85

I'm not a Cole die hard, but I was still curious about what his magnum opus would end up, and after almost a decade of teasing, here we are. Was it worth the wait? I would say yes definitely, but it's not quite a masterpiece.

As a double album, it does have alot if problems with bloat, with a good amount of songs being longer to they really need to. What I ended up doing was treating each disc as it's own album, and this helped me appreciate each disc more for what they offer. ... read more

Deftones - private music

If I had a nickel every time an older group blew me away this year, not with an album from their prime but from their most recent work, I would have 2 nickels. It's not alot but it's weird that it happened twice.

This was my first proprer Deftones album. I have heard some songs before but I didn't fully get into them. Their slower shoegaze blend of metal was not something I was particularly seeking back then (Love Digital Bath tho, that song is magnificent). Either because my ... read more

Clipse - Let God Sort Em Out

As a first introduction to Clipse, this slaps! I'be heard Pusha before but this was my first time hearing about Malice, and both if them blew me out the water! Both of them keep up rhyme schemes through whole verses like it's nothing. Pharrell also did excellent on the production, with large chunks of the album stuck in my head for the past few weeks. People who says this album is purely lyrical hasn't listen to it, simple as that.

This is proof that artists are never too old to ... read more

JID - God Does Like Ugly

I took the week in order for the album fully sink in, and I'm glad I did! I thought the album was somewhat disappointing on first listen, and I think it's in part due to how varied the album feels. Some highlights stood out initially for sure, like Glory, Community or Wholeheartedly, but pretty all the songs except What we on ended up growing on me.

It's not on the same level as TFS, nor did I expect it to. But this is very much along the lines of a DiCaprio 2, agruably even ... read more

Haven't kept up with new music releases recently but I'll never say no to more JID

Super solid for what it is, but nothing extrodinairy. Makes sense since it's mostly leftovers from the main album from what I've heard. Animals (Pt. 1) goes absolutely crazy but the ai filter on Em's verse just sounds off, even if the verse itself is very good. I also really like Behold and Lisa. Knew better is good but it's the one song on here I don't really care for. ... read more

I don't normally follow eurovision as a Canadian but one of my friend who does showed it to me and I legit cried. Absolutely gorgeous if Switzerland doesn't win I will riot

Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City: B-Sides
89

Checked this out on a whim and it's actually good damn. This feels like the missing link between their two first records. If you're one of the people who didn't like WiTC more melancholic tone compared to their debut, check this out. Incredibly polished for a throwaway complilation of unreleased songs.

Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City

Underrated as hell album. Sure, it's not as bombastic as Silent Alarm but as a whole I find it alot more varied and cohesive. Tackleling the often fruitless yet relatable desire to be seen as special and extraordinary by others, and using that as a springboard to explore deeper societal issues. Kele's songwriting was already very good on Silent Alarm but here it's a step above.

And it's not like the album is lacking in bangers either. Song for Clay, Hunting for Witches and ... read more

JID - The Forever Story
95

Not much I could add that hasn't already been said. One of the best hip hop album of the 2020s so far, and a contender for one the best of all time depending on who you ask. It's one of the album that really made me love this genre I was initially only familiar on a surface level a few years back. Outstanding.

JID - DiCaprio 2

Not as consistant or as cohesive as TFS but still fucking awesome. That first half is actually crazy. The stretch from Slick Talk to Working Out has some of JID's best songs back to back. The second half is weaker but does very much have it's highlights (Tiied, Skrawberries, Hot Box, Just da Other Day, Hasta Luego if it counts)

Favorites: Slick Talk, Westbrook, Off Deez, 151 Rum, Off Da Zoinkys, Working Out, Srawberries, Hasta Luego

Not his absolute best, but still a banger notheless. I'm just glad JID is back it felt like forever (story lol)

The Mars Volta - Lucro sucio; Los ojos del vacio

Is this the return to their old sound some hoped for? No, but what they have here is also great. It feel very reminiscent of the ideas put in place in their self titled, but here it feel like the vision is fully realized. We have lush and beautiful instrumentation accompanied by a Cedric that sounds completely refreshed. The idea of each song transitioning into each other is very interesting, making almost for an album long song. It is still on the slow side, but it's a big step up from ... read more

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

This is peak indie rock/post-punk. There's an almost uncontrollable amount of energy through the entire album, like it can it barely be contained until it burst out during the final strech of each song, even the calmer ones. It makes for an incredibly fun listen that seemingly never gets old. The lyrics from Kele Okereke are also very solid, tackling a multitude of political and emotional subjects. It's maybe not the most unique record, but the execution is top notch.

CHILLING! I liked alot of Visions of Bodies Being Burned when I first listened to it a year ago but I didn't really know what expect after that. Personally I think they killed it (Pun maybe intended lol). Goes in a more cyberpunk and dancier direction than VOBBB without losing the harsh instrumentation nor the horrorcore influences that makes this group one of a kind.

Playboi Carti - MUSIC

I wanted to rewrite my review because I felt I didn't say a whole lot initially. I though I could do better. Pls remember that this is my opinion.

The album it fine, but it's the most extreme mixedbag I've ever seen. It has it's moments of greatness here and there, some of the beats are really solid and the features are all enjoyable. But imo Carti is the worse part of this album, and some of these songs are straight up garbage. And at 30 songs it's just way too ... read more

Spiritbox - The Fear of Fear

This was my first exposure to the band. Hella solid, but unfortunately the singles are pretty much the best songs here. A bit disappointing but this is such a short project I still recommend checking it out. Cellar Door and Jaded are definitely up there as some of their best songs. Too close/Too late and The Void are also really good as well.

On KodakEZ's review of Spiritbox - Tsunami Sea
"Great reviews! Glad you enjoyed some of the album despite the heaviness of some of it haha. It's great to explore unfamiliar territories from time to time. Btw, Cortney LaPlante is actually the one who does both the screaming and the singing! This woman is incredibly talented it's crazy. As others have suggested, Eternal Blue, their previous album is definitely a good choice. It's a bit gentler and melodic than Tsunami Sea. Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park could also be a good choice. In the end is very overplayed sure, but the rest of album hold up well lmao. Depending on how you feel about prog and longer songs, I feel like you could enjoy some Tool as well down the line."
