twenty one pilots - Drum Show
95

Ok this is still very early but I have my concerns. Firstly though, god I love Tyler’s vocals, MORE SCREAMS YEAHHH, secondly, JOSH VOCALS AAAHHHH!!! Thirdly, fucking amazing chorus got me in my feels.
Starting with the good, this sure is a show of Josh’s drumming talent because man does the drumming go hard as hell here, so punchy and suits the overall tone of the song perfectly. When he comes in on the bridge with his soft, vulnerable vocals, stating “I want to ... read more

Quadeca - Vanisher, Horizon Scraper
88

We start off this album in such a touching, gorgeous tone, with serene instrumentals and soft, careful vocals from Quadeca, formulated in a surprisingly professional manner to make for great peaceful songs. This is especially apparent on I DREAM ABOUT SINKING, which feels like a lucid dream state, floating through the air until you suddenly fall into the ocean, and from then onwards you have a much more menacing atmosphere, leaning into more catchy, punchy tracks that ooze with confidence and ... read more

DON BROCO - Cellophane
96

Don Broco fully embrace the metalcore sound with a kickass introduction to the new album era. Featuring easily the sickest vocals from both Rob and Matt, a very gnarly riff throughout the track and full on production that made for a surprising banger. I was not expecting the band to lose the somewhat goofy appeal and just go fully intense but it worked out very well and it makes me super hype for whatever the full album has to offer us.

Vylet Pony - Love & Ponystep
93

Brilliantly infectious, incredibly intricate, masterfully crafted, Vylet Pony does it again.

Love & Ponystep is a lengthy story of feeling lost without love, accepting that before loving another, you must first love yourself. From front to back this album is so thought out that it boggles the mind to think of how long it must take to put something like this together. Generally this album is heavily focused on dubstep and electronic dance, which is usually super fun and hard hitting, while ... read more

twenty one pilots - The Contract
95

Routines In The Night except it’s got much more energy, amazing vocals, tasteful autotune and is somehow even more catchy. The instrumental power here is top notch, with the incredible production from the one and only Paul Meany on full display. It’s so great to hear Tyler scream and rap in the same song again!! Not to mention the music video is a work of art, the budget must have all gone into this one haha. Overall an interesting song to open the Breach era, switch ups that take ... read more

Miley Cyrus - Something Beautiful
82

Endless Summer Vacation was underwhelming to say the least, and with that being the only full album of Miley’s I’d heard before this I was very skeptical of the high rating, but thought I’d give it a shot. Thankfully, this album feels like Miley leaning into a sound that she truly wants to pursue, unrestrained by an urge for mainstream success, resulting in a much more flavourful, personal experience through catchy beats, bumping vocals and much more interesting production. ... read more

Sleep Token - Even in Arcadia
82

I feel like the pressure to live up to their success took a toll on the band, as explained in Damocles, resulting in a clear downtrend in quality overall, although there is still plenty for me to compliment. A few tracks lack much substance, being totally unmemorable and fall into the background, whereas others are emotional, powerful songs that prove that they still have the ability to produce meaningful songs with their controversial style. I believe that in their efforts to produce fresh and ... read more

Mei Semones - Animaru
92

So I’m just catching up on albums released recently and Mei basically just made the most consistently homely, gorgeous album of the year and I really enjoyed almost every song, so, I guess this is my current album of the year now? Basically just combine a really pretty feminine voice with strings, jazzy drum beats and heartfelt lyricism and you have this album, and I really don’t have many complaints for what this tried to do. It’s kind of if Laufey was Japanese and an even ... read more

Car Seat Headrest - The Scholars
83

Gotta agree with the majority here, this was a curios push towards a new and fresh sound from CSH, focusing on a more artsy style of rock that feels like an attempt at engaging listeners through its atmosphere and unique style more than through emotionally driven writing. A lot of these songs are upbeat in nature, while others are somewhat dramatic and uncertain, giving a lot of attention to the instrumentals performed by the band. Alongside Will’s solid vocals there were some new voices ... read more

Gigi Perez - At The Beach, In Every Life
88

In its execution this album is consistently stunning, proving what a strong writer Gigi is and showing her capability to create emotionally impactful and sonically compelling music, though it isn’t uniquely generational to any standard. For an individual who has only been in the industry this decade to be thrusted into the spotlight with the huge hit single ‘Sailor Song’, there was undoubtably huge pressure on her to follow up with an effort that could allow her to ride the ... read more

Black Country, New Road - Forever Howlong
93

As if there was ever any doubt (I had doubts). It only took three fantastic and very similar sounding women to replace the legendary Isaac on vocals, but otherwise this is very much still the same BC,NR we know and love, though in a bit of a new direction. Forever Howlong is noticeably more sweet and pretty sonically compared to previous records, with many of the earlier tracks being infectiously cheerful and whimsical, with further songs having a little more stress present, flowing with the ... read more

High Camp Factor - Birdsongs of the Greater Georgia Region
6

Nature is so beautiful ❀️✨

Panchiko - Ginkgo
88

Basically just a stunning album and crazy growth from their early work. I slept on this album big time and I regret that, but I’m happy to say that I see the light. Wonderfully charming listen, often soothing, other times purely intriguing, but always passionate. The writing here is very high quality, easily some of the best indie rock I’ve heard this year, and the soulful vocals match the vibe really well. Outside of the Billy Woods feature and some songs just not sticking with me ... read more

Doves - Constellations for the Lonely
90

What a fantastic set of songs and a beautiful atmosphere, I never expected to hear such a well made psychedelic pop rock sound this year but Magdalena Bay might have competition! The first half of this album is pretty much perfect, loving the aged vocals alongside the dreamy soundscapes, it’s great to hear such passion with this kind of sound from an older band. It’s fairly nostalgic, but almost feels ahead of its time somehow, like this is exactly what I expect older generations to ... read more

Sleep Token - Emergence
80

This is…an odd introduction to the new era. Emergence gives us a taste of the classic Sleep Token elements of trap rap and metal that they love to combine, but compared to TMBTE, this feels more reserved in its heavier aspects. Firstly, the off beat trap drums are a strange choice, but when they bring in that beefy guitar it actually goes hard as hell, though I was very unsure at first. It then continues in typical fashion with the standard drum patterns from II that we know and love, ... read more

Spiritbox - Tsunami Sea
87

Tsunami Sea is a great example of modern alt metal being consistently gnarly and having personality. Courtney’s vocals are easily the most impressive part of this album as she has such fantastic control and screams, while the various guitar riffs nail it and the drums blow you away. What brought this album down was its writing and structuring which sometimes fell a bit flat and relied too much on the effort from the band musically. Plenty of great material to return to, just not as great ... read more

Lady Gaga - MAYHEM
90

For the most part, this album is a killer, gorgeous, sexy album that is confident, passionate and all around fun as hell, fronted by one of the most captivating vocalists on the scene right now. Say what you want about some songs being safe and easy, there is a plethora of brilliance to be found throughout this album, ESPECIALLY in the first half, which houses some fantastic dance pop tracks that I couldn’t stop grooving to and smiling while having the time of my life. There are so many ... read more

Pink Floyd - The Wall
86

‘The Wall’ is a story driven album focusing on the character known as ‘Pink, throughout the album Pink sinks into a lonely, hateful mindset, driven by a secluded upbringing that has culminated into the metaphorical wall that this album is themed around. Pink blames his relationships and experiences for building up this wall that now prevents himself from reaching out to people or being free and happy. Pink eventually is able to force himself to tear down the wall after ... read more

The Brecker Brothers - The Brecker Bros.
79

Whilst funky and full of strong moments, it did have some moments that I had to force myself through for being somewhat draining. It’s one of those albums that you can say is good, but need to have the right mindset and taste to really get a whole lot out of, which obviously I’m not quite ready for. Enjoyable, but wouldn’t return.

Mystery Jets - Twenty One
72

A pretty typical indie rock album with some charm to it that likely comes from the date that it was made, with the imperfect production adding a somewhat nostalgic feel to it, alongside the shouty vocals. It’s consistent and has passion laced in each track, yet fails to really grasp my attention, as it does suffer from being a little too common with its sound, even with some pretty strong lyricism. Two Doors Down is easily the biggest bop of the album and one that I’ll probably ... read more
