Lathe of Heaven - Aurora

I didn't like it.
There's almost nothing I liked about this. There's also almost nothing I dislike about this, but when every act they remind me of did a lot of things better, even acts I didn't even bother going back to for a full album to log them on here, I wonder how much of this is actually just middle-of-the-road genre chasing music. To put it in a more optimistic light, I'm happy if this is the type of music that Lathe of Heaven enjoys listening and thus simply ... read more

Wisp - If Not Winter

I didn't like it.
The instrumental performances I found really cool, and there was a bit of spoken word in there that I found refreshing in Black Swan. The interlude of Latvia and the transition into the title track are well done.
But all in all the album feels a little too monotonous. After you've heard one track, you've heard it all. In princinple this isn't bad, but the way it is executed here is uninteresting and has a distracting effect from the music. The vocalists ... read more

The Residents - Meet the Residents

1970s musique concréte with aurafarming and hype moments. I get why they smoke and drank so much before the 2000s.

Bob Vylan - Bob Vylan Presents The Price Of Life

Holy shit it's as if the br*tish took clipping., Rage Against The Machine and a single drop of Death Grips and mashed it together. Of course this is polarizing. Bobby says as much, "It's too black." The problems they're addressing are by no means new and I'm not about to act surprised that they still ring true three years afterwards, in fact, they have worsened. In that way, the RATM comparison feels pretty apt. If you trace back these supposed radical criticism of ... read more

Calva Louise - Edge of the Abyss

I didn't like it.
I discovered Calva Louise in 2022 and really liked their singles Belicoso and, later, Feast Is Over. I suppose alternative metal does describe their general direction, with an * for metal that leans more towards rock than the extreme, despite Jessica's frequent screams. On top of that, it seemed like with Over the Threshold, they were starting story with concept albums. I'm a sucker for these, despite the cheesiness I associate with them now they're what ... read more
