Grindr hookup pulled this record from his collection when I was over at his house, that's how I know he wasn't messing around. This Wally Badarou fellow played synths on lots of prominent albums throughout the eighties, namely 'Speaking in Tongues' by Talking Heads and 'Nightclubbing' by Grace Jones. Badass!
Hello Danny Lopatin I know you are like one of the great visionary electronic music producers of the 21st century and it’s cool how many different things you’ve done over the course of your career BUT after all this time part of me has really just been itching to hear you make Replica 2 and ‘Tranquilizer’ is basically exactly that and it sounds really great so thank you thank you for making Replica 2 for me Devin.
A little while back i ran into my former high school cross country assistant coach behind a gay club in NYC. We smoked out on the stairs and caught up for a bit; we talked about Piero Umiliani, and he spoke at length about how he was traveling to South America in a month’s time to join some sort of revolutionary militia. He also recommended this album to me. Cool guy, great record! First four songs are out of this world good.
Obvious unassailable classic, sounds like magic. So many weird idiosyncrasies and details in these tracks, the double kick drums that wrap up "Darling Nikki" are particularly unexpected and delightful. I think in 2026 I'm finally gonna sink my teeth into this titanic discography.
Underrated! Some very decent gospel-tinged blues rock with lovely lead guitarwork throughout, and a handful of truly excellent songs that elevate the whole thing. “Gotta Serve Somebody” and “Slow Train” are both great, the closer is quite pretty, and “Precious Angel” is among my favorites from Dylan. Beautiful vocal performance and a heartening religious sentiment. I can understand why the messaging of ‘Slow Train Coming’ bounces off some folks, ... read more
They're just so legit, some of the freshest rock'n'roll on the market. '3D Country' had stronger tunes and a more thoroughly melodic approach overall; 'Getting Killed' by contrast is a prettier, more texture-forward listen. The overall quality remains high across both records, and the band's stylistic range continues to impress. Thoughtful reappropriation of Stones-y classic rock licks with some tasty krautrock rhythms thrown in to spice things up this ... read more
First time I listened to this I was hunting for Riddler trophies in Batman: Arkham City for the Nintendo switch and the guitar tones were honestly kind of blending into the sound of my air conditioner in an unflattering way so I didn’t love it BUT. Returning to ‘private music’ in a more optimal context I can confirm that this shit rocks.
Deftones are a super consistent group. I already thought that 2020’s ‘Ohms’ was pretty great, but with ‘private ... read more
Big step up from their debut imo! A highly formulaic (but still occasionally electrifying) side A makes way for a much more varied second half, loaded with much more pathos than one might initially expect. Terrific production across the board, you can definitely hear Porter Robinson in the mix, but Angel and Lulu still forge their own distinct take on electro house. Some of the toothiest synth sounds of 2025, get em right here.
Bands like The Beths make the world go round. Dependable, consistently solid indie rock music.
Every single word of this song is burned into my brain. The dig at Kanye, the Luigi bar, the Lady Gaga line, the fuckin' piece/peace bar. Sheesh. Outrageously good rapping.
Too long to be as good as 'Heroes and Villains' but still a wonderful time for what it is. I'm continually impressed by just how many styles of trap production Metro seems to have a knack for; this tape here is a successful emulation of party music from a decade ago, with some sugary sweet ringtone rap melodies from even further in the past thrown in there for good measure. This nostalgic, optimistic sound couldn't be further from the dour, cold-blooded trap music that Metro ... read more
THE Bob Dylan album. Dylan closes out his electric trilogy with a dense, abstract, indulgent poetic yarn that exemplifies all of his best qualities as an artist. His voice has never sounded better, there’s enough instrumental variety to keep the music engaging for 72 demanding minutes, and, most importantly for Bobby, the lyrics are absolutely top-shelf. The run from “Visions of Johanna” to “Memphis Blues Again” may be the greatest collection of four consecutive ... read more
Absolutely nuts. I struggle to imagine a better PinkPantheress song than this.
Massively massively underrated record, some of the best track-to-track flow I think I’ve ever heard. The whole thing plays out like the kind of feverish nightmare that has you sweating through your bedsheets and waking up wondering which parts were real and which parts you imagined.
Obviously pretty fucking great. Pusha T has been one of my all-time favorite rappers for years and years now, he has this uncanny ability to rattle off lethal punchlines like he’s breathing. He’s so routinely, effortlessly good at what he does, that it’s easy to forget what it sounds like when he raps alongside an MC who legitimately pushes him to his venomous artistic limits; re-enter his brother, Malice. It’s a joy to hear these guys trade tough bars for an entire ... read more
I didn’t enjoy the last Sextile album (truthfully I can’t remember much of it) but this new release has got the goods. Nothing all that unexpected, just some tight, nasty, enjoyable electroclash with delicious synth sounds. Hoping my August resembles this vibe. ^_^
