Queen Latifah - Black Reign
82

Black Reign isn't quite as good as her debut, but its standout tracks are some of the most enduring records in the history of hip-hop. It also has the distinction of being the last Queen Latifah album. What do you mean "she did four more albums"? This was it.

Queen Latifah - Nature of a Sista'
72

Nature of a Sista is a good album that never progresses past that. It's a shame because her debut and the album that followed this are great. While not necessarily a sophomore slump, it's very much not an improvement over the classic that is All Hail the Queen.

Queen Latifah - All Hail the Queen
87

Latifah was a hell of a rapper in her day. Anyone in the Native Tongues crew had no other choice. While not a perfect album and the production choices do leave something to be desired on occasion, Latifah was at the top of her game as an MC and this album is her defining body of work.

Slum Village - Fantastic, Vol. 2
91

Fantastic Vol, 2.'s existence is interesting. Vol. 1 didn't get officially released until 2006, but had made an impact on the underground scene after being leaked in 1997. The follow-up to one of the most heavily bootlegged rap albums of all time just happens to be of the greatest rap albums ever, full stop. Sequel albums, especially in rap, have a bit of a stigma. For every Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2, there are 20 more Blueprint 2s. This album completely overcame that issue, building upon every ... read more

Funky DL - The In and Out of Love Tape
80

Some of DL's best ever love songs across his career were compiled in one project. The result was this tape. Also, it's a travesty that Trinity is the only time Funky DL, Cise Starr, and Substantial have ever rapped together on one track. It's a fantastic song.

Kilo Kish - AMERICAN GURL
82

Kilo Kish has been that girl since like 2012 when she was appearing on Childish Gambino mixtapes. This is a great album, but I do hope we don't have to wait 6 more years for the follow-up.

Robert Glasper - Black Radio III
75

Black Radio 1 is a classic. This album is not that one, but I'm glad Glasper didn't try to replicate the moment that was that album.

Khruangbin & Leon Bridges - Texas Moon
70

Pretty straightforward collaboration between two very talented musical entities. I believe there's one more Khruangbin/Leon Bridges project coming fairly soon, and I imagine it will also be good.

redveil - learn 2 swim
80

There is no rapper alive that has a brighter future than redveil. This is a special, special talent whose ceiling is disgustingly high.

Dreamville - D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape
72

This mixtape is not as good as Revenge of the Dreamers 3, but there are a lot of very good songs here. JID and J. Cole definitely had some things to get off their chest. Unfortunately, Ari Lennox's tracks are the weakest parts of the project which is especially disappointing because of how great her appearances on ROTD3, the Spillage Village album, and her own solo album are. Overall, this is a good album, albeit one that won't get repeated play from me.

Nigo - I Know NIGO!
60

The best songs are great (Come On, Let's Go, Here Me Clearly, the opener), and the worst songs are BAD.

Coast Contra - Apt. 505
70

They have a ton of untapped potential and I hope that they realize that.

Mike Dimes - IN DIMES WE TRUST
87

This album GOES, my goodness. Mike Dimes has a potentially very bright future.

Funky DL - Still Classic
80

He's still so good, this far into his career.

Conway the Machine - God Don't Make Mistakes
90

This is Conway's magnum opus, and from an artistic perspective, has the potential to go down as the defining moment of Griselda's run.

Big K.R.I.T. - Digital Roses Don't Die
70

Let the man have some fun!

Curren$y & The Alchemist - Continuance
75

It's obviously not as good as Covert Coup, but Curren$y and The Alchemist have chemistry you can't teach, so anything they do together will be no worse than "very good."

Saba - Few Good Things
89

I'll write a full review later but I LOVE this album.

Hatchie - Giving The World Away
80

This is one of the best dream-pop albums of the last few years. There's definitely some Cocteau Twins influence on here but that's to be expected. Hatchie herself is a good vocalist and there are a lot of great production choices here. The only major issue I have is that tracks 7 and 8 are a bit of a lull on the album. However, the best tracks on this record are some of the best songs you'll hear this year, especially the closer, which will rank extremely highly on a lot of people's year-end ... read more
