The Lemon Twigs' fifth album is once again nice to listen to with its glimmering arrangements and harmonies, yet the music is still wholly unoriginal by design. Sadly - to me - this is fun in some tracks and almost drab in others. I hope they can find a twist on this formula for future projects because I can't see the draw anymore outside of people that enjoy the nostalgic rehashing.
I actually like a lot of the tunes on this, but it's all too short and doesn't lead anywhere, and ultimately this feels like scraps. I'm actually disappointed that a lot of this was never developed, which just leaves me scratching my head even more as it feels like Fike isn't interested in these Ideas himself, but at least wants to make a few bucks off of them.
Of all the 80s revival albums - and there are many of them at the moment - this one feels the most like pure 80s cosplay. Sadly it loses all of Conan Gray's usual introspection and insight through the caricaturesque glitter of the sound it's forcing, sometimes with little taste. Maybe that is a positive though, as this was also the case for many of the melodramatic 80s music it is imitating.
