Jeff Buckley - Grace

The only time music has brought me to tears, let alone managing to do so consistently.

Favourites: So Real, Grace, Lover You Should've Come Over, Dream Brother, Forget Her
Least Favourites: Corpus Christi Carol

JPEGMAFIA - I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR YOU

My late album of the year I think.

Favourites: SIN MIEDO, i scream this in the mirror before i interact with anyone, vulgar display of power, Don't Put Anything On The Bible, i recovered from this
Least Favourites: it's dark and hell is hot

Edit: either on or off the drugs samples an AI song, which is unfortunate.

jschlatt - A Very 1999 Christmas

Can't believe this is actually really good, I mean the singing isn't stellar but it's fitting and mostly enjoyable. Composition is fantastic.

This project pisses me off so much, almost every song is like halfway to being great but gets ruined by some shitty, unnecessary lyrical or instrumental inclusion.

Kendrick Lamar - GNX
89

Some of Kendrick's lowest lows and highest highs on the same album - impressive tbh.

Favourites: reincarnated, heart pt. 6, gloria
Least Favourites: gnx, squabble up

Cities Aviv - COME TO LIFE
85

So spacey and hypnotic, the bathroom-echo effect on the vocals almost make it sound like some sort of sermon. The lyricism is quite consistently good and whilst the rapping isn't at a particularly high calibre, the overall soundscape of the album makes up for that. At some rare points though, the sound becomes either too cacophonous or too passive - despite Cities Aviv having hit the right balance for the majority of the project's runtime.

Favourites: Head, Dissolve, ... read more

OutKast - Aquemini

There's some fantastic rapping performances on practically every song, and they're accompanied by stellar, forward-thinking production. The skits at the end of some songs get annoying on relisten.

Favourites: Rosa Parks, Aquemini, Da Art of Storytellin' (Pt. 2), Chonkyfire
Least Favourites: Slump, Mamacita,

ippo.tsk - seeyalater stratocaster

Great, short project. Really appreciate the tone of the album and especially the spacey, rustic feel of the production. I wish JKTmelts had better vocals because it's genuinely so close to being an amazing song. Similarly, I felt the vocals and lyrics on fall semester song were a bit lacklustre with an alright instrumental.

Everything else seems well thought-out and very cleverly composed.

Favourites: taste the rain, rose-tinted bitter grudge

Charli xcx - Brat and it's the same but there's three more songs so it's not

Only really fuck with Spring Breakers, the other 2 songs are meh.

Charli xcx - BRAT
93

I had zero idea what sort of sound to expect going into this, and left amazingly surprised. Outstanding album and by a very fine margin my album of the year so far, an intimate party anthem. Some songs have a few corny lines, but when Charli's lyrics shine they definitely make up for it.

Favourites: Von Dutch, Mean Girls, 365, Everything is Romantic
Least Favourites: 360; Girl, So Confusing; Rewind

Sade - Love Deluxe
90

Beautiful singing with wonderful lyricism and entrancing, simplistic production. Can't really fault the album anywhere, just don't see myself replaying some of the tracks in the future, but they're still great in the album's context. I guess I wished some of the songs would "wow" me more, though I feel them growing on me long-term?

Favourites: Kiss of Life, Like a Tattoo, Pearls, No Ordinary Love
Least Favourites: Feel No Pain, Bullet Proof Soul

Vince Staples - Dark Times
85

Fantastic and unique take on a dark atmosphere, with a level of great lyricism that I expected from Vince. Really love the authentic vulnerability of this album, almost like a Dave project or MMATBS - the rawness just toned down slightly. Vince is quickly becoming one of my favourite artists tbh, and I'm happy he's released an album with a real narrative structure. There are a few tracks however that just aren't all that interesting musically, and aren't entirely saved by Vince's flow or ... read more

Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

I haven't had this great of an experience listening to an album since Rodeo, this has instantly shot into my favourites and I did not expect it at all. Literally no misses, every track is an entirely unique experience. I don't think I can actually put my thoughts about this album into words, it's so sonically futuristic whilst somehow still sounding familiar. Lyrically great. Every single flow is pretty much flawless.

I don't know what you could dislike about this project, besides there not ... read more
