Nas - Illmatic

As far as "pure hip-hop" goes, this is just a flawless album. I listened to it years ago and already had generally positive thoughts, my relisten cemented them. I can't identify a single striking weakness in any track. Ridiculous debut album, ridiculous flow, great lyricism, fantastic production.

Great production, great features and occasionally interesting topic matter. That's about where the positives end. Kali's singing is painfully mediocre and lacking emotion for the majority of the album. Her lyricism is generally decent, but very often bland and surface-level - sometimes corny.

That being said, there's definitely some catchy songs, though many of them are made by the featuring artists rather than Kali herself.

Great introduction for me into the shoegaze genre. The blend of sound throughout the album is surprisingly coherent despite the (intentionally) messy production. The sequencing of tracks is superb too, with great - though very muffled - vocal performances.

I will say I'd prefer more clear mixing at certain points, despite that sort of defeating the point, in order to make up for the lack of interesting instrumental progression in some songs. That being said, I could see every track growing on ... read more

The lyrical density of this album is incredible, and the production manages to create such a uniquely violent and haunting atmosphere unlike anything I've heard before. Jasmine Rodgers' vocal performance is genuinely fantastic too, her range is great.

The only thing holding this album back is that the first half's near-perfection makes the second half seem much less impressive in comparison.

Favourites: Twilight, Duvet, Fool

Billie Eilish - HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

I was very sceptical going in, but 4 listens later I'm pleasantly surprised. Don't think this'll ever be my exact type of music, but a few of the songs will definitely be getting replayed.

Chief Keef - Almighty So 2

No idea what I'm missing with this album. Find practically the entire album just tolerable and nothing else, except for the last track

Injury Reserve - By the Time I Get to Phoenix

Chaos pieced together perfectly, shouldn't make any coherent sense yet it resonates incredibly deeply with me
