I remember this one being underwhelming when it released, just because it wasn't quite as creative or inventive as I Disagree or Eat, but it has grown on me the more I listen. Honestly, there are a lot of fantastic songs on this, even if the whole thing is pretty run-of-the-mill alternaitve rock. My rating may still be biased just because of how many times I've listened to this.
Debatably her best project to date. It's hard to articulate just how desperately I want her to do a whole album like this.
My rating for this one is probably very biased, but this album is actually very important to me, and it's kind of hard to explain. To put it simply, it's the first metal album I ever got into and is responsible for me getting into heavier music in general.
The way this fuses nu metal and Industrial metal with pop is very unique and fun, kind of like a perfected version of the last couple of songs from AIAG. The lyrics revolving around how artists are abused in the music industry ... read more
I think this one is probably the most clever project from Poppy's early years, and seemingly the most involved with the lore around the character. There's clearly some story going on, where Time is Up represents a twist in which the robotic celebrity gains consciousness and decides she must destroy the world. I still don't know how Aristicrat, Girls in Bikinis, or the title track fit in, though.
The whole thing is wonderfully absurd in the most fun way. There are so many ... read more
As good as this is, it did start to bore me a little in the second half, so easily their worst so far. They definitely made more gripping music with blackgaze.
Finally getting back to talking about Poppy, but I'm actually going back to this one since her EPs are worth talking about too.
This was okay, but pretty generic pop music. Definitely not as creative as most of her other stuff from her YouTube era.
It doesn't feel quite as memorable, but they still got that raw energy I love from them
I'm revisiting the Poppy albums because I want to write a review for Empty Hands.
I've always wished this one could be more clever with how it uses the YouTube Poppy character, and all the social commentary that comes with that, but this is actually a solid pop album. It's not amazing all the way through but I really like a lot of these songs, and I think the production is cool without feeling overproduced.
A return to form, much better than Death We Seek and almost as good as The Way It Ends.
Not just heavy but creative and unpredictable. Just more reason for me to believe that mathcore is something I need to explore more.
