(II) like everything by crystal castles is hard to rate due to what happened and the disgusting actions of Ethan Kath, but I would be lying to myself if I said I didn’t love this record in all its glitchy messy glory.
Best: Year of Silence, Baptism, Vietnam, Doe Deer
Worst: Birds
Pachinko’s deathmetal is a fascinating record from many different angles. Both the story of the record and how it sounds are both equally as fascinating to me and is almost hard to believe was created by a bunch of teenagers with little ambition of success
Best: laputa, stabilisers for big boys, kicking cars
Worst: sodium chloride
A darker and more menacing follow up to dummy, Portishead’s self titled release is one I’ve found difficult to form my final opinion on as it does so many things brilliantly and more interestingly than dummy yet still doesn’t quite outshine it due to the occasional half baked idea and dodgy mix
Best: Humming, Over, Mourning Air, Western Eyes
Worst: Cowboys, Elysium
A truly interesting and visionary record deserving of the flowers it gets, with great songwriting and fantastic production. Not always fully engaging but that feels somewhat like the point
Best: Mysterons, Sour Times, Roads, Pedestal, Glory Box
Worst: It’s a Fire, It Could be Sweet
A true defining moment of the 90s and in my opinion trip hop’s finest hour (unless you want to count homogenous as trip hop). Dark, brooding and transcendental
Best: Angel, Teardrop, Inertia Creeps, Dissolved Girl, Group Four
Worst: Exchange
