Cymbals Eat Guitars - Lenses Alien
98

Cymbals Eat Guitars is potentially the only band that may have three perfect albums, on their first three attempts no less. This album is more desolate than any of their others, and rather than the catharsis that their first and third albums exemplified, this album conveys a sort of bleak, empty, hopeless sorrow. Lenses Alien is an album that has kind of existed in the shadows of the two albums it was released between, but it shouldn’t be viewed that way. This is indie rock perfection, ... read more

Foxing - The Albatross
88

Seeing these guys today (technically) and I’m incredibly excited. This remains my favorite Foxing album, which puts a lush twist on the usually drier emo sound. In fact, I would say that this has become one of my favorite emo albums ever recently. Absolute artistry!

Jessica Pratt - Quiet Signs
86

This is Jessica Pratt’s most underappreciated album to date. It continues to improve on the sort of lo-fi, reverb-y sound that she had started experimenting with on “On Your Own Love Again,” and there are some beautiful, almost earwormy moments on this record that have me absolutely hooked. Fare Thee Well and Here My Love have unforgettable choruses that keep playing in my head 24/7. Even though I think “Here In The Pitch” was an improvement for Pratt, this album ... read more

Jessica Pratt - Jessica Pratt

A lovely, otherworldly folk experience. This should be considered a freak folk classic (or at least adjacent to something like that). Jessica Pratt’s debut s/t album has a very soothing effect on me, and even though she hadn’t quite developed her sound yet, this is still a spectacular experience.

Jessica Pratt - On Your Own Love Again
77

My least favorite Jessica Pratt album, though it is still very pretty. I found myself being bored more often than with any of her other records, although I think the highs here are great.

King Krule - Man Alive!
100

Archy Marshall’s other magnum opus. In many ways, I see this as a more refined version of the sound he was going for with The OOZ. It is a bit more consistent, and I think the flow of this album is even better than its predecessor. I cannot even imagine a world where the tracklist of this album was different. This is truly something special from a special artist

King Krule - The OOZ
100

I don’t think any album I have listened to has conveyed depression as soulfully and bleakly as The OOZ. Archy has soundtracked my life for many years, and I don’t see any future for myself without this album in it.

bygones - by-
95

The best Zach Hill project? I think so. At least, it is surely my favorite. This abrasive, sometimes emo-tinged album is incredibly addictive, and it has become one of my favorite math rock albums since I first listened to it a few days ago.

Floating Points - Cascade
81

This record is badass. Felt like I was tripping at the club. He hasn’t lost his steam since dropping Elaenia!

Colin Stetson - The love it took to leave you
90

Last year, Colin Stetson released “When we were that what wept for the sea,” which was easily my favorite album of the year and one of my favorite and most listened-to albums of all time. Now, the greatest bass saxophonist ever has dropped another fantastic album, which sounds like a more sinister successor to his gorgeous, sometimes anxiety-inducing 2023 album.

It still shocks me that Stetson is able to produce most every sound on his records with only a saxophone. The incredible ... read more

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains
100

LOSE is my favorite album of all time (hence my profile picture), and for as long as I have loved Cymbals Eat Guitars, I have loved this album as well. HOWEVER, much like the entire indie rock scene of the late 2000s and early 2010s, I too have been underrating this epic of an indie rock album. Even if it does wear its influences on its sleeve pretty overtly, Joseph D’Agostino puts his unique genius all over this album and its incredible songwriting and instrumentation. From the cathartic ... read more

MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks
87

This is one of the best slacker rock albums of the decade. It may not be the most innovative album ever, but the songwriting is amazing and more than enough to make up for the fairly straightforward sound

Laurie Anderson - Amelia
83

This is a pretty fantastically executed concept album about Amelia Earhart’s attempt to circumnavigate the Earth and her tragic disappearance in attempting to do so. I absolutely love the cinematic orchestral arrangements, and Laurie’s spoken word passages are captivating. I also love ANOHNI’s contributions to the album. Overall, Laurie is still an extremely creative artist putting forth some amazing work.

Grimes - Visions
98

I don’t know what it is about this album that keeps me coming back. It is almost certainly my favorite pop album of the 2010s, and Grimes’ reverb soaked vocals and punchy, synthy, heaven-sent production combine to make such an ethereal and unique sound that I haven’t come across anywhere else. I am absolutely in love with everything on here, and I can only hope that I find some other album that gives me this same feeling somewhere out there.

Sabrina Carpenter - Short n' Sweet
72

This is pretty nice! No song is better than Espresso, but this is still a rather cute and sometimes witty pop album

Magdalena Bay - Imaginal Disk
88

Yeah, pop album of the year without a doubt. So colorful and unique and psychedelic and all of the descriptors apply to this lovely project.

Elliott Smith - Roman Candle
98

Easily one of Elliott’s best. This album is the purest demonstration of his genius, in his brilliant guitar work and honest lyricism. It’s short, it’s sweet, and after listening more, this may become my favorite Elliott album

Alvvays - Antisocialites
100

This is the catchiest and most memorable album I have ever heard. I’ve been listening to this nonstop for the past few months, and I can certainly say that this is one of my favorite pop/indie rock albums I’ve ever heard. Pure serotonin!

Mk.gee - Lonely Fight
95

This man does not miss. Ever

Vijay Iyer, Linda May Han Oh & Tyshawn Sorey - Compassion
70

It’s good, but maybe not unique enough to justify its length. Still some nice jazz for easy listening.

"@steadyrhythms agreed! My favorite musical moment of all time is the beginning of Laramie, which also has some of the best lyricism I’ve ever heard. “Your street’s just a place, it has no memory at all” is permanently ingrained in my mind. And then the last line of the album is so poetic and something I don’t think I would ever hear from anyone besides Joseph D’Agostino: “Every rich kid’s basement smells the same.” What an absolutely breathtaking album"

"Great review of my favorite album from the band that made me love music! I too have been searching for years for someone who knows and appreciates this band like I do, but it’s nice to see them get the praise they deserve from the online community!"

"@addi I am so absolutely jealous you got a copy for $10, but I’m so glad you enjoy it! Some of the most unique sounds I’ve heard in a rock album, and it encapsulates pretty much every emotion I can think of. Lenses Alien is definitely my second favorite from the band, it too is incredible and absolutely an overlooked album in the indie rock scene."

"That’s great! I always find it interesting (in a good way) when a song clicks for other people but not for me. I was admittedly a bit harsh in my review, but I’m glad you liked it! Just not for me."
