While I like the idea of this soundtrack in concept, it doesn’t play out very well. I don’t think it’s all that controversial to say that Charli isn’t the most versatile singer, and that comes into play here unfortunately. To a certain extent I appreciate the atmosphere and palette of some instrumentals (particularly House), but there’s nothing here that does Charli any favours. I think a more technically proficient and tonally appropriate singer (Lana Del Ray) ... read more
Really enjoying the ug rap arms race to create the most synthetic most brutal rap music possible
I 100% just need more time with this, but I found it a little weak in the middle. There are some truly great and all-time important songs on here, but to be honest, not a whole lot you can’t get from subsequent albums.
100% serious when I say this is a future classic underground rap album. The flows are insane and ok’s production is fantastic
They are gonna hate this, but it’s a decent go at some blog-era indie pop stuff that really matches Feng’s personality and delivery. There’s a not insignificant amount of boring or even baffling songs throughout but for his second project ever it’s not bad.
Beautiful and admirably intimate for how expansive the instrumentals get at times. A little too Bridgers-esque for me to give full credit, but this will definitely get a relisten.
Really visceral, pretty brutal at points. Some of the electronic elements sounded a little dated, and some rhythmic parts were a bit dull, but overall this is pretty thrilling. Also the Billy woods feature is great but they absolutely should have got a grime mc on that beat. Overall definitely a grower
Really consistent project from Lone. In the past he’s struggled to edit himself and maintain quality across large tracklists, so it’s cool to see him cut down a little and definitely get a lot more consistent with beat selection and rapping. A buncha hits on here
First full listen to a black midi album and it’s awesome except I think there should be more Greep. Looking forward to more listens
Very impressed with the percussion in particular, but there’s way more to love about this album. Excellently sequenced and on the whole a much warmer version of Radiohead
Very very impressive to put out an album as sprawling as this without losing its cohesion. A lot of that is down to the excellent track selection and sequencing, and of course Bladee’s charisma as a songwriter and on the mic, but credit is due to F1lthy and the other couple of producers on here for crafting such a great crop of beats. There are a couple of legs on this that feel a little dry and a couple songs that should have been cut altogether, but Bladee’s experience and ... read more
Not only does Joji fail to take his brand of Lo-fi alt pop in any new directions, he doesn’t even live up to the standards of his past albums. There isn’t a single song on here that’s any better than the most underdeveloped and underwhelming deep cuts from Nectar. The few moments he shines through the dullness are the heaviest and most abrasive instrumentals.
For a small scale Kendrick album, this delivers on everything you’d want. It’s varied enough in width and depth, it’s got a range of interesting features, and best of all the production is on average better than anything he’s dropped since tpab.
