So I remember before I purchased this record how it was critically acclaimed and on everybody's top 10 list of that year and everything. After reading that almost every single person gave this record high marks, I knew it was going to be a good one...
Obviously the focal point of this band is their singer, Adrianne Lenker and her unique, quivering baby doll voice. And look I'm a sucker for girls with that voice, see: Mum, Stina Nordenstem, Bjork, Mazzy Star, Camera Obscura, Joanna ... read more
Awww man kid. You definitely got something here going on. I really like it. I liked the 1st verse, the spoken word n such, but I wasn't going to love it if the second verse was the same... but lo and behold, you had a melody in there. Pretty catchy too. For me, this is some night time back porch music. Just really nice, distant, soothing(with a smidge of anxiety in there in the voice). Keep it up. It's for fucking sure my favorite thing that you've done. Just remember, ... read more
Okay, so sadly, Galaxie 500, one of the most influential indie rock artists ever, easily the top 20, maybe even less, just aren't well known outside of the many bands that they have influenced. I'm not going to go into a big monologue about them, but I will say that they are a wonderful band. I own all the records, and I even own their box set. This band has made me realize, that I can play guitar better than them 100%, I can sing better than them 100%, but at the end of the day, ... read more
Ok. First let's wish the greatest kid that ever lived a Happy 15th Birthday. Love you Slumber aka Snooze..
So before I get into it, I was surprised to hear the Gil-Scott Heron sample. He's one of my favorite artists, and he should be more well known than he is(rip). Remember Snooze, I have you Gil-Scott CD's. Anyway, as what you'd usually expect from Snooze, great lyrics, deep af. Meaningful and it gives up all hope that we can come to a turbulent time in our lives, and ... read more
If you catch me on the right day, I might say that this is my favorite Beach Boys record. Yeah, yeah, I know, but Pet Sounds is(fill in the blank), and it is, but this is probably just as good. It's a great record for a sunny summer, Sunday morning listen. I think that its perfect. Add Some Music to Your Day is just sunny, without being flaky. Forever is certainly one of the most deeply touching love songs ever recorded. And nobody has ever mentioned this, but At My Window sounds the ... read more
Ahh man. I love this fucking record. This is some obscure funk from '75. In bought it as a teenager on the cover alone. Then iI look at the back cover, and these cats are all dressed like 70s pimps, or black hippies. To this day, no matter who it is, I will buy any disco or funk record on sight. I remember being a kid, and being allowed to stay up late when my Mom had friends over. She would be playing Disco records, and everyone was dancing. It was dark in the room, save for a ... read more
Snooze aka Slumber, the 14yo white kid, drops his first single! I knew it would be great, his wordplay never disappoints. Tight flows as usual. But yeah, this is great. This is his first track that he produced himself. He raps over a hip hop boom bap loop with an added sample that sounds like an indigenous Asian instrument. Kyoto perhaps? Anyway, thanks Snooze for not using a trap beat that is so annoyingly ubiquitous these days. Sigh. His lines are always clever, spiced in with lots of ... read more
Ok yeah, Oasis were great, but when Noel Gallagher went solo, that's where it really happened. I had reservations about his solo stuff initially, but then I heard this, and I knew he IS(was) Oasis. This song is just 1000% perfect. After I heard this, I bought all his solo records, the singles, the rare demos, and all of them are classic. Sure, he may seem like a narcissistic prick, but I think it's just part of his character. You listen to this, and you can tell that he's not only a ... read more
Ok, let's talk about this record. First off, I buy anything by Jan Jelinek. I've been buying his stuff since 2000. I used to go to this record store in Michigan that basically would never sell anything on a major label. You won't find Coldplay or Billie eilish or anything like that there. Pavement? Sure. Radiohead? Probably not. So I would go in there on Saturday in the afternoon and I knew the owner and the workers obviously because I frequented there, so I would just ask them "what's ... read more
So, this was a record(cassette) that I purchased the day that it came out. I never told anybody that i owned it because I was waayy to cool to own this crappy, mainstream pop music. Soooo, id listen to it on my car on a battery operated cassette player on the way to and from work at my job at the time(Toys r us). I loved this record. Even now, I know every single second of this record. I loved it so much that I wrote her management a letter asking if they ever need a guitar player, to call ... read more
Deep house at it's finest. I don't think anyone uses the term "Deep House" anymore. Hmmm. The house music label Naked Music, while house purists may(or may not), look at Naked as not as house as authentic house, it has made many classic 12 inches, and this one is one of the best. I've played this vinyl easily 100 times. They are also known for their unique artwork on their records. Lay back on your vintage couch, grab a glass of wine, and relax. No jeans or T-shirts here, wear the ... read more
This record was played on my front porch probably 100 times. This record is more Detroit than Detroit. Detroit house music at it's finest. The build up, the vocal samples, the minimalist funk, soul just shreds. I'm so glad that I was able to grab this vinyl in 1996, as his records come and go so fast and when they are gone, the collector vultures demand insanely high prices. Beautiful record!
IM NOT EDITING THIS REVIEW. MY INITIAL REVIEW WAS WAY TOO GENEROUS. AFTER LISTENING TO THIS AGAIN,
THIS RECORD ALL SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF HER OTHER SONGS FROM THE PAST, BUT BORING AND WITHOUT ANY HOOKS. WORST THING THAT SHE'S EVER DONE.
The new Taylor Swift record. Nice. Taylor is loved by the common, terrestrial folk, and she's one of the few mainstream pop artists that are allowed to be liked by indie, hipster kids, while still retaining hipster status :).
Let's get down to the nitty. ... read more
Big tackle coming up. Love that celebration!!!!
Ok. My son hooked me up with this Quadeca record. Admittedly, I've never heard of them(him). I'm shocked that I've never heard of this record, but then again, when there aren't physical copies of a record available, it generally falls under the Docs radar. With that, before I listened to this, I had no idea what kind of music it was. I still dont. What is this? Emo, hip hop, indie, psych pop, shoegaze, hyperpop, soundcloud rap? It's all of ... read more
Ok. Nostalgia time. So I used to live at record stores. Almost literally. There were about 15 record stores by me that I used to frequent as a young lad in Michigan. Every week I'd go to most of these stores. I trusted the musical taste of the record store owners that I trusted. I'd walk in there, buy what I wanted, and I'd always amend my shopping by talking to the workers, or owner and asking "what's new that's good?".
One guy, a store owner named Glen, told me that I should buy ... read more
So I just purchased the new Downriver single. Here's my unbiased review. .. you can tell these guys put a lot of time and effort into this track, and Big Ups for all their hard work. Definitely a lot of talent and creativity in this track.
Yes they are a hip hop duel, but this isn't your everyday hip hop track, it's very experimental. Instead of 808 and 1970 Soul samples, you get some single note, minor key guitar playing, it takes about a minute before the versus come in, so you just have to ... read more
I've loved Oasis since their 1st record. Noel Gallagher is one of the best songwriters of our generation. Dude had wrote sò many classic songs. Soooo many. Many people pissed on this record. Heck, even Oasis hated this record. I love it. Apparently they were all coked up during the recording and they denounce this record. No idea why. Wonderful record. Oddly enough, i don't like the single D'ya know What i mean. Aside from that track, i love the rest. Long live Oasis...
Ryan Adams is the most prolific artist in history. Dude put out 13 records in 3 years! He probably has over 30ish records between all his bands, maybe more. I have all of them, and I still haven't got through his whole catalog yet.
So this record really resonates with me. You've got rockers, mid tempo jam, and slow, beautiful songs. This dude plays many styles, but he keeps this record's sound in bathed in the Alt-Country sound. Can't say enough about this guy, but if you want to find out ... read more
I'm not going to go over every single song, that would be of no value. This is honestly one of the best records ever recorded in all time. Yep. I said it. I have thousands and thousands and thousands of records and CDs and cassettes and all that junk. And for me to say this is one of the best records of all time, actually is a bold statement. Now if you're a football captain or a cheerleader, and you're 100% perfectly happy all the time, you're really not going to care about this record at ... read more
