This was a rough one. Australian band The Church have always been one of my favorite bands. Easily. Eeeeeeeasily in my top 10 list. No singer sounds like Steve Kilbey. No one. Such a recognizable voice. Amazing songwriter. I wasn't sure which record to review. Priest equals aura? Starfish? Remote luxury? Gold Afternoon Fix, Etc etc. I finally figured I would just review a two CD compilation from the early to mid-years. It's perfect.
There's nothing I can say. Nothing. They started off as a ... read more
Okay, my lovely son Slumber just did a review of the Arcade Fire reflector. That's with a K. The record did not do as well as it should have with its fans, though thankfully Pitchfork gave it a 9.2 or a 9.3 I can't remember. The thing is, they flipped the script and had the guy from LCD Soundsystem produce Reflektor, which wound up with some disco type of tracks. Yes it's a lot to sift through-it's a double record, but it's a really good record as well. It's a more dance-oriented record than ... read more
Why do I buy so much music? Well, because record stores are mostly defunct now, and since I would visit them a couple times a week when they were still around, it's a bummer that I can only buy music online. Which brings me to the reason that I buy so much music.
Because I basically have a record store in my house. Tons of CDs and records that are unopened, tons of things I bought on a when, etc. So on the weekend like today, while I'm cleaning, I go through my music library and I grab ... read more
I remember when I was a teenager and I first heard this record. It sounded like nothing that I've ever heard before, and it's still sounds like that. Being a big fan of the velvet underground, I was excited to hear this record. I was a little taken aback because it was so scary and haunting and it sounded like a soundtrack to a funeral. The years have been kind to this record and I love it more and more as the years go by. Rest in peace Nico, even though you're kind of fucked up towards your son
Ok. So this review is for my lovely son. He played this for me the other night, and I was going to review it, but I figured I would give it another listen. He knew I had apprehensions about reviewing this, because I don't really like to listen to music unless there's a physical copy. But even besides that, I usually feel like if there isn't a physical copy, that means there's a reason they didn't release it physically. As in it may be subpar. But here goes...
Okay so Ultralight Beam, the first ... read more
Because embarrassingly, I have hundreds and hundreds of CDs that I haven't even opened or listened to, I'm making a point to blindly grab a CD or two on my day off and plug it in my CD player and listen. So today, I grabbed this Obsessives CD. I actually don't even remember buying it. Doesn't even look familiar. Well I open it up and try to see what I'm getting myself into. I remember buying a bunch of brand new CDs online from an indie record label, and this was one of them. If I'm not ... read more
Ah Bjork, the Icelandic princess. Not trying to be cool haha, but not only do I still own this on cassette, I own all of her first bands' cassettes, The Sugarcubes. Look. This is her first solo record. Sort of. She made a record when she was 11 I think; its from 1977. I own the vinyl of that- what a cool thing to have!! But this is her solo record after the dissolving of The Sugarcubes(see what I just did their? Clever, isn't it?).
This record is great. She always pushes boundaries, ... read more
I'm so excited! I just bought this 1935 classic song by Lucille Bogan, on vinyl! She also went by the name Bessie Jackson. These songs were only played in "after hours" clubs in the 1920s and 30s. Anyway, not too much to say about, it's self explanatory.. She is an innovator for sure. And damn, this was recorded in 1935, waaayyyy ahead of its time! Here's the link to the song.

Oh LCD. I remember when I bought your 1st record. It was glued to my soul. But you keep going and kept at it work the same results... I could write books on LCD Soundsystem records. I loved their first record sooo much. Then I bought their next record, This Is Happening. I'd drive my daughter Soma, to kindergarten and play this record. She loved Hit. She still knows the lyrics. Great memories. It makes me sad, in a good way.
Now on to this record. It's just wonderful. So sure, they have ... read more
This is some amazing shit. Classic Americana writings ala Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, etc. To preface the story of this brilliant song, Sexxy Red is very frustrated because she needs her n*gga free asap. She needs him to get out the pen so she can f&ck, shoot up the club, cash out at the mall, you know. Important things. Tears flow from mine eyes whilst reading her lyrics. Some of her most moving lines are as follows:
"Fuck the police, fuck the pigs, they some ... read more
Why should we care about Jeff Buckley? Yes, he has a great voice. So many cliches are mentioned in every review of this record, things like "voice of an angel". And hey, it's not false. But what made us care in the first place? Well, he is the son of the experimental, troubled folk singer, Tim Buckley. I am a massive fan of Tim Buckley, more so than Jeff Buckley. I first heard someone cover his Dad's song, Song of The Siren on a compilation when I was about 13, Id no idea who he was, ... read more
This is an apropos time to review this record.. Sadly, the singer Shane McGowan died today at the young age of 65. I would have reviewed This Record anyway because I'm a massive massive fan of it, but today is the day.
Obviously Shane is famous for having the most disgusting teeth of any musician of all time. He was a pretty big heroin addict but more so, one of the hugest alcoholics probably in the universe. He seemed to have gotten clean about 15 years ago and was in a reality show given a ... read more
Mark is one of my favorite artists of all time. I buy every single thing that he does as soon as it comes out. I probably have about 50 cds of his. He's very prolific. This is just Mark and his acoustic guitar. No, it's not a christmas record, though he does sing White Christmas, well, most of it. Mark has one of the best voices of this generation.. his recent stuff that is just talking and rambling? Not a huge fan, but this is gold.
Oh you fickle Bright Eyes fans.. I love this record. It's so intimate and a huge holiday staple in my house. I'll have to see if I have 2 copies of this so that I can give one to my son.
Hearing this record, you think of a bunch of friends getting together in their basement, having a few beers, and playing Christmas songs. Little Drummer Boy is so warm and fuzzy... Maria Taylor(Azure Ray), has a great voice and it works so against Conors' unique voice.. Yeah. I'm all about this record...
One of the best Christmas records ever. First off, I love Low. I've always followed their career ever since their debut record. Mimi(rip) had one of the prettiest vouce ever. Her husband Alan, is a great guitarist, though minimalist. They became more experimental later on. Interesting fact: They are Mormons. Anyhow, these subs consist of originals and traditional Christmas songs. I've probably listened to this record 100 times. So pretty. Sometimes fuzzy. Always nostalgic. I love Low.
Ok. Tis the season. Lets switch it up. No hipster indie rock reviews. No Shoegaze. No IDM. No dubstep. No lets-see-how-many-cymbals-that-we-can-fit-in-a-second, Trap music. No Brit rock. No glam rock. No SoundCloud or Mumble rap, etc. It's time for the purest, most perfect music in the world. Christmas music!
My Christmas music collection is unmatched. One of my favorite genres. I have so many obscure, impossible to find Christmas singles, that sadly, many will not be on this site, i hope ... read more
The Dolls! Massively influential band. They were the precursors to the Ramones, Hanoi Rocks, GNR, etc. They are the epitome of glam rock. So many people have been influenced by this record, and they begat some great bands..
When I was a kid, I never bothered to listen to them. Mostlly because I was real turned off by dudes in makeup. Even girls that I date generally don't wear make up. Not my thing. It's seems fake. Anyway, I also thought that they were a joke band because of the way ... read more
Man. Such an underrated band. Songwriter Kevin Junior is pretty great. I remember seeing him on the front and back cover of their record A Month Of Sundays and thinking that he was the coolest looking rockstar ever. His hair was freaking cool and he wore vintage jackets/sportscoats. I still wear sportcoats to this day, literally because of him. Anyway, the band.......
They have that whole Beatles/Lennon sound going on. Kevin sounds like Lennon. The Chamber Strings records (sadly, the only ... read more
Don't hate me. I don't really like this record. I think it's massively overrated. Sure, since of my dislike for this record could be from heard half the songs on the radio soooo many times. Why this was so huge and groundbreaking at the time, in the 1990s era, is beyond me. Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation(or Goo, which was closer to the time of Nevermind), should have overshadowed this by far. Or better yet, My Bloody Valentine-Loveless. Whatever, nevermind.
